View from the Cache

This should be easy to locate as you get GREAT GPS reception up here. This cache is located on Coal Creek Mesa at an elevation of 8800 feet at the base of Mount Gunnison and provides a great view of the West Elk Wilderness Area and surrounding mountains. If you are in Paonia, you can see Mount Gunnison to the East. To get to the cache, take the county road up Minnesota Creek to N38 52.37 W107 29.59. At this location there is parking if you have ATV’s, Motorcycles or Horses. From this location you can also go to my other caches "Jumbo View" and "All Cracked Up" You can drive a 4WD (A good aggressive high clearance small one would be best) almost all the way to the cache but a “Pavement Queen” is not recommended as there are some sections of the road where brush will scrape the side of the vehicle. DO NOT travel the last several miles of the road if rain is to be expected. The road has several steep sections and will turn into a slick mess if wet. It is approximately 12 miles one way from the parking area to the cache. There are also many other 4WD and hiking trails near this area. The cache is an ammo box and contains 5 Happy Meal toys. Please rehide well. Enjoy the view.
P.S. A good side tour only a mile away is to go see the Indian Caves. Parking is located at approximate location N38 52.02 W107 20.77. From there, walk along a trail to the southeast for a 100 yards or so to the cliff edge where you can look down on part of the caves. If you are feeling brave, you can take the trail around the northeast side of the cliff to get to the caves. The trail contains a short section about 3 feet wide with an overhang on one side and a 100 foot drop on the other side. CROSS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!

Congratulations to chefstern for the FTF

Amazing, amazing views from here. Good weather and a good ride in to the end of the line. This cache deserves to be a little less lonely. Thanks for the great placement. TNLN, just enjoyed the absolute solitude.

It's been a long time since this cache has been found--in fact, it's going on 4 years! So I was a bit anxious about its condition as I made the long haul in with my puppy Orizaba. Will it be missing? Will it be in good condition? Will it still be findable? Well, the cache was in place and in perfect condition!

I've long wanted to get into this cache. My daughter lives in Crawford, and she's mentioned the marvelous country above Minnesota Creek, and the splendid views that can be seen from Coal Creek Mesa. She was SO correct! Aside from a few workers noted at the extensive petroleum exploration and production sites along the early portions of my route in, and a couple of cowboys attending to their cattle, we had the entire area to ourselves today. And once at the cache site, with the incredible scenery associated with Mount Gunnison rising in my face, I simply wanted to relax and look. And look I did. I was sort of transfixed by what was before me. It was difficult to tear myself away after signing the cache log. But I had "miles to go before I sleep...miles to go before I sleep", so I reluctantly turned my back on all this and headed out. But I have some photos that will be solid reminders of Mount Gunnison View. Thanks for giving me the impetus to finally commit to getting there.
What a View!!

In Great Condition

Logged 54.1 miles on our 4-wheelers. Went to cache and enjoyed the great view. Then to the Indian caves and had to get down on my hands and knees at one point. Did not realize Indians wrote with burnt sticks and in English, LOL. Continued North on trail until it ran out, then came back out and up to Beaver Res. Wonderful day. Cache is in great shape. Took coin, left T.B. and H.W. mystery car. SL-TFTC. Am going to move coin since it is one month shy of being stationary for 2 years. Am leaving T.B. knowing it should be picked up soon. Huh G.W.?

Checked on cache today and all is well. Will upload a panorama of the great view in a couple weeks. The heavy snow this winter was not good for the road as it is SEVERELY rutted from the water running down the steep section. The Forest Service is supposed to be up in a few weeks to repair the road but it is still a great ATV ride or fun if you have a very aggressive Jeep type vehicle.

We got so close to this one but there was one too many trees in the way. We were able to drive around one of them but the other was just too big. We would have walked the rest of the way but we had our little ones with us and that probably would have been just a bit too much. We will try again later. Maybe we can borrow a 4-wheeler...
