Cache is in a small, quiet, well-maintained picnic area between Ridgway State Park & the town of Ridgway in Ouray County near Hwy 550 South. Cache-site is just over 1/2 mile walk on paved pathway from the south parking area, and a 1.3 mile walk on paved pathway from the north parking area. There are restrooms & covered picnic tables at site. Stroller & wheelchair-accessable until last several feet. Parking & access are no-fee.

The Uncompahgre Riverway Trail is a paved bike & walking path that follows part of the 1887 narrow-gauge Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad bed & right-of-way some 5 or 6 miles from the northern end of Ridgway Reservoir southward to Highway 62 where it runs through the town of Ridgway. Open to bicyclers & walkers, wheelchair-friendly, strollers & dogs-on-leashes are all welcome.

The Denver & Rio Grance Western narrow-gauge railroad built its Montrose to Ouray line in 1887 to take advantage of the rich silver-ore freight that was pouring out of the hundreds of mines above Ouray. By the end of 1890, the famed narrow-gauge Denver & Rio Grande Southern railroad line ran daily from Ridgway to Telluride (and was eventually built all the way to Durango). The last train made its final run along this 1887 D&RGW railroad-bed in 1953.

There are wildlife, habitat, & historical information signs along the path for your enjoyment. The paved trail crosses a wonderful old D&RGW railroad bridge just north of the southern-most parking area listed above. Both listed parking areas allow no-fee access to the Riverway Trail as well as to Ridgway State Park.

Decided to go after this one following my Eagle Medicine Wheel find/Great Pumpkin Run (Walk) Virtual 5k. It was a beautiful sunny day with the fall colors in full bloom here in Western CO. TNLNSL TFTC!

...Continuing my walk from "The Medicine Wheel" I set out for this cache. I ended up making it much harder than it had to be.

It was cool to walk a little way down the trail. I had been down the trail as far it would go several times on my bicycle but I have never been able to ride from the park to Ridgway due to an incomplete trail. I'll have to come back sometime. A cool park and a cool trail.

Replaced broken cache container. Hint is still good! Added pencils, sharpener, geo-caching info sheet, and plastic bag to cleaned-up logbook. Removed all else (dirt/trash/rocks/bugs). Added small bagged "treasures" for kids. Please folks: lets keep the contents simple & nice for our geo-cachers' kids! No rocks or trash, please. Thanks!!
