This mystercache can be solved in two ways: at home with an internet search, or, while exploring the "Gems and Minerals" exhibit at the posted coords! Finding the answers at the posted coordinates is available 9-5 every day except Christmas. The cache container and logbook are within a short walk.

Below is the option to solve the questions from home. Scroll down if you are planning to solve at the posted coords.

Cache is at: N 39° 44.ABC W 104° 56.DEF

A: The Alma King is a rhodochrosite, which is the Colorado state mineral. It is the largest rhodochrosite crystal in the world! Using google, in what month was the Alma King found? (January=1, February=2, etc)

B: Large specimens of smoky quartz crystals have been found at Devils Head in Douglas County, Colorado, only 34 miles from the posted coords of this cache! Looking down from the top of the crystal, how many sides does a well-formed piece of quartz have?

C: In 1914, over a 30 day period, the Cresson Mine in Cripple Creek produced ore worth ___ .2 million dollars. Fill in the blank using google.

D: Colorado's largest known gold nugget was found in 1937. How many troy ounces does it weigh? Divide your answer by 2 to get D.

E: The Colorado state gemstone is aquamarine, a light blue-green gem variety of beryl. Colorado's state rock is white yule marble, and remember the state mineral from the first question? This makes Colorado's state mineral, rock, and gemstone: red, white, and blue! What year was it named the state gemstone? Multiply the last digit by 2 to get E.

F: Bells in mine elevators were used to signal events and directions such as hoist, stop, accident, and also what floor to bring the elevator to. In Colorado, signal 5-4 will bring you to what floor? Use only the second digit of the answer, after 1.

Below is the option to solve the questions on-site, at the posted coords. It may help to save the questions offline in case you loose data.

Cache is at: N 39° 44.ABC W 104° 56.DEF

A: Find the "Gems and Minerals" exhibit. Go through the hallway approaching the cave. After the first turn, you will see the Alma King, a large red rhodochrosite, which is the Colorado state mineral. This is the largest rhodochrosite crystal in the world! Watch and listen for the clue: In what month was the Alma King found? January=1, February=2, etc (Don't use the phone, but the other media nearby. If it's not active then you may have to google).

B: Follow the path for several more turns until you see an impressively large purple amethyst geode. It's a dark display with lights shining in on the purple crystal cavity. The next one over will be called "Crystalline Quartz." Find the largest dark crystal, labeled QUARTZ var. Smoky. This was found near Devils Head in Douglas County, Colorado, only 34 miles from here! The bottom of the plaque has an item reference number starting with DMNH. Subtract the first digit from the last digit to get B.

C: Go through the next room, and turn right after you go through the doorway. Along the wall, find the informative display titled, "Colorado's Economic Minerals." Under 1890's, "Gold Rush to Cripple Creek," ___ .2 million dollars worth of gold was removed from one small cavity in the Cresson mine. Fill in the blank.

D: Look for the gold room. Find a piece of gold labeled "Colorado's largest known nugget," found in 1937 (the one you're looking for is NOT Tom's Baby). How many ounces does it weigh? Divide that by 2 to get D.

E: Continue past the "Amazonite Crystal Cavity" diorama and enter Colorado's Mining Heritage. There is a small case at the start featuring the Colorado state gemstone, aquamarine. Colorado's state rock is white yule marble, and remember the state mineral from the first question? This makes Colorado's state mineral, rock, and gemstone: red, white, and blue! To find E, how many pieces of large, uncut aquamarine are sitting on the white cloth?

F: Around the corner, find the "signals" sign for a mine elevator. It is NOT the Surface Tram Signals poster, keep looking! Under "Level Signals," 5-4 will bring you to what floor? Use only the second digit, after 1.

Making the find: Log only, BYOP. High muggle zone, try not to draw too much attention! Please re-hide exactly where you found it! The future of this cache is in your hands: again, replace it well hidden! Please drop a note if log needs more paper or if plastic bag goes missing. Might not be snow-friendly. Visited the museum but thought there was a plaque or exhibit outside because of the references to “at the coords” and no mention of admission. I suppose the 9-5 should have been a clue that the answers were inside, but we missed that. No problem, we have modern phones with google! Unfortunately our patience for web browsing on small screens and not readily finding the info on google, we gave up after several minutes of trying to get coords.

We walked around the building to get a few munzees and other caches and tried to dirty cache this one just using geosenses, but we didn’t turn anything up there either.

We we're finding the clues as the museum was closing. Security helped us find the last few before shooing us out the door. By then it was too dark to find the cache. We came back today and finally found the cache. Thanks for the fun.

While I hoped to cache in City Park during a trip to Denver for a wedding, I wasn’t sure if I’d get a chance to visit the museum, so I solved the puzzle ahead of time. When friends also wanted to see the museum, and admission happened to be free this weekend with my Bank of America credit card, I did end up drooling over the lovely specimens in the Gems and Minerals exhibit, not to mention the amazing gem carvings. But first, I looked for the cache. Previous logs and photos definitely helped, and once I moved a bit farther from the building and sidewalk than I initially searched, I was able to get my hands on the sneaky, if properly thematic, hide. Thanks so much for the fun!

Im here at DMNS with my anatomy students visiting the health exhibit, which I always enjoy. I had been through the Gems and Minerals exhibit before, but didn't realize there was a mystery cache associated with it. Zoomed through it this morning, gathered the information and made my way to GZ only to discover my arch-nemesis of hides! It took me about 15 minutes of searching in 100 degree weather before I gave up, went back to my car, checked to make sure my coordinates were correct, reread the hint, headed back to GZ and then instantly made the find. This is my typical tale of this type of hide. TFTC! All is well with this cache. This gets a favorite.

Took the kids to the Museum today before the traveling exhibit goes away. We made some time to walk through the gem and mineral exhibit. Only had trouble with the first question since they were doing work in that area and the media was turned off. Cell reception is terrible inside so I finally found a place where I could access the internet. It took quite a bit of searching to find that answer, but it finally worked out. Finding the final on the way back to the car was tricky at this time of year. Lots of muggles and more cover than normal, but I finally spotted it. Thanks for adding to our fun museum trip.

Last time I searched for this the cache it was missing. This time no problem. Solved a long time ago. Found after finishing the Colfax marathon. I did not have pen with me so I am posting a picture of me with the log. Thank you for placing this cache and helping to keep our recreation going.

Midwest Tour through America

After arriving at Cincinnati airport, we‘ve started out trip through mid-west USA
Our first stop was at Louisville before we continued towards Evansville, Saint-Louis, Kansas City all the way to Denver- Skyline of the Rocky Mountains.
We’ve stayed in Colorado for a couple of days and drove to the Rocky Mountains to Mount Evans and past the beautiful Echo lake.
We took the historic steam train in Georgetown to explore the Rocky Mountains – what an unforgettable experience.
We’ve visited the open air arena in Red Rock Park and have informed ourselves about the historic and musical past of this area.
We soon had to leave beautiful Denver to continue further towards the north Via Golden, Fort Collins, Cheyenne. We’ve took a bit of time to hike through the Toadstoll Geological Park- beautiful hiking destination.
We’ve crossed the border to South Dakota and visited the many sights along the way - Hot Springs in the Black Hills, Wind Cave NP, Jewel NP, Grazy Horse NP, Custer-State-Park – we were even able to spot some wild bison’s there.
We’ve then continued our tour towards Sylvan lake along the panorama road -“Needles Highway”. This windy road leads to needles past the many pine forests along the way.
Continuing further towards the Rushmore National Memorial.
We then weren’t far away from rapid city or the city of the presidents where we took part of an impressive sightseeing tour where we got to see 43 bronze statues of all of the US former presidents.
We took a quick detour to South Dakota before we continued towards the south towards the Badlands NP – a plateau with edged mountains, deep canyons and steep cliffs – impressive to look at.
After we have left the Badlands, we continued towards Mitchell along the Highway 90. We visited the corn place with its special artefacts and paintings made out of corn.
The next days are leading us back again towards the east towards Sioux Falls.
We saw many sights here for example the Sioux Waterfalls, Old Courthouse etc
We went shopping at Spirit lakes before continuing towards Minnesota. We also went shopping in the Bloomington Mall of America.
We went for a city stroll in Minneapolis visiting the many parks near the Saint Anthony Falls and the Washburn A Mill.
We have visited the cathedral of Saint Paul and the Minnesota State Capitol.
We left Minnesota after Saint Paul and have crossed the border to WISCONSIN continuing towards Madison to see the State Capital.
We have visited the famous Harley-Davidson-Museum in Milwaukee.
We collected a number of Petoskey stones while strolling around north Michigan Lake. These stones are unique to this region.
We are now continuing towards Chicago where we will spend a couple of days as well.
We’ve done a bit of shopping and got to know about the skyscraper history.
The first skyscrapers were built in the 80s and 90s. One of the most impressive ones is the trump tower directly at the Chicago River. The facade mirrors the Wrigley Building and the Chicago Tribune Tower.
We then had to say bye to Chicago after a couple of days. We then continued towards Gary (INDIANA) and New Buffalo (Michigan). We have covered 3 states: Eck Michigan, Indiana and Ohio
We now have to go back towards Indianapolis where the legendary race took place. We have also planned a visit to the Hall of Fame Museum before going back to Cincinnati.
Going to the GIGA event:
We have met many friendly cachers and we have talked about our mutual hobbies and our trip in and around Cincinnati.
We have covered approx. 4000 miles and have experienced a lot. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful as well.
Thank you to all the owners for placing and maintaining the caches.
Best greetings from Bavaria Team sissifalke
