Above Gold Hill. Can be driven to. At an elevation of 8429 feet.
A site of minor historical importance. But what has been done to it is interesting. A name on the stone has been chipped away twice. The name that has been chipped away is Col John M. Chivington, the hero of Glorieta Pass and the butcher of Sand Creek.

Whoever chipped the name off the stone should realize you can't change history or erase it by removing a name. The monument is now a monument to one persons ignorance.

Do a little research about the Sand Creek massacre, and see how ignorance possibly delayed the admittance of Colorado into the United States, not to mention the inhumanity.

To claim your find, email me who erected the monument and the date. For extra credit, send the name of the idiot that chipped away the name.

Mrs. Herndonrd had a horse thing between Longmont and Boulder so I spent a couple of days getting some virtuals, earthcaches, and assorted others up in the area. FeartheFish tagged along for part of it. Interesting getting up to this and the other virtual; beautiful views everywhere. Answer sent to CO. TFTC!

I drove up here to grab the two virtuals and, wow, what amazing views! Of course I had to go on to peek at Gold Hill. I made up my mind that I will return with my flatlander sis and nephew and possibly my husband in a few weeks. There was maybe one car that drove by at this location, but otherwise it was quiet and peaceful. Thanks for bringing me here for the views and the horrible history.
I can understand the defacer, though. Nothing happened to Chivington. He dusted his hands and walked away after ordering an absolutely brutal massacre on mostly women and children then displaying his abhorrent "trophies". The Native Americans should be remembered, not him.

Day 5 of an epic 6 day journey out to the western frontier. I had some vacation time that I needed to burn up by the end of the year, and what better way to use it than to go Geocaching! My main goal was to find caches in New Mexico and Nevada, which would complete my map in the western US. The rest of the 4 remaining states are on the East Coast. Secondary goals were to find oldies, mostly virtuals, and high favorited caches. The only bad part of the trip was that it rained every single day of my vacation.

I headed south out of MN on Sunday and returned home on Friday.
Sunday - Drive all the way through to Colorado (15 hours!)
Monday - Cache in and around Denver and Colorado Springs, with an attempt at Pike's Peak (closed at Mile 14)
Tuesday - Head south towards GC19 and then west through Wolf Creek Pass
Wednesday - Four Corners monument and west towards Nevada
Thursday - After a night in Richfield, UT, head east through the skiing areas of Colorado towards Nebraska
Friday - The long drive home

Thanks to all the cache owners for placing these caches for me to find and for keeping the oldies going all these years.Pretty neat and weird piece of history here.

love finding these with my wife and son! Great way to spend time as a family and they're a great way to learn some history that would otherwise never be known. beautiful drive with nice views. We researched this a little bit when we got home, but were never able to find who defaced the monument, no extra credit for us! TFTC!

I'm currently on a 12 Day road trip from Indiana to Colorado and my goal is to get geocaches in as many counties as I can along the way. I lived in Colorado for four years during college and haven't been back to the area for 10 years. I had kind of forgotten how great western Colorado is. I need to come back here more often. Today I traveled from Estes Park down to the base of Mt. Democrat where I camped at nearly 12,000 ft. Thanks for the cache.

After a fun-filled three days in Estes Park, Smithj9 and I cached our way towards Golden to spend the night. We went after Virtual and Earthcaches mostly, but found a few others along the way. Thanks to all the CO's for placing and maintaining these caches for us to enjoy while visiting from Florida.

Acachingcat and I came to the area from Florida. Our primary goal was to find as many virtuals and earth caches as possible. We also grabbed a few other caches along the way. We had a whirlwind trip finding 7 new states, hiking to mountain tops and learning so much history along the way. We saw lots of deer, elk, moose, bunnies and marmots while in our travels. We had a blast and appreciate every CO for placing caches for us to find along the way.

Flew into Denver last night to stay in the Russell Gulch area and ride horses with Ginger at A&A Stables. Did this last year for Geowoodstock, and loved it so much we decided to make a vacation of it again this year. Grabbing a few virtuals while out here too.
We love the ghost towns out in this area. Who knew that mines could just leave, not pack up but just leave when they are done? TFTV ACT
