We thought the lesser-used end of Mt. Herman needed a cache.
Everyone goes to the real summit at the north end with a great eastward view, but the south summit is also very nice. The panorama from the cache includes the Tarryall and Kenosha mountains and several fourteeners like Mt. Evans, Longs Peak, and of course Pikes Peak and pretty much all of Rampart Range.

Take the Mt. Herman Trail (716) to the saddle, then head south. The trail is less distinct than the main trail to the north summit. Don't miss the Bottomless Pit at N39 04.696 W104 55.524 on your way past.

The cache is a plastic jar with a log, pencil, and small trade items. It's hidden pretty well to prevent muggling.

 Hints

It's about the hike and view, not the hide. The cache is almost out of sight in a crack behind a few stacked rocks about 8 feet below and a little southwest of the highest point in the rock pile.

Thanks for the fun cache! I needed a good hike today after a long work week. I decided I'd climb up Mt. Herman and grab a few caches along the way. Resistance was my ultimate destination. Once I summited in the saddle I turned south and mostly bushwhacked to this one. What may have been a trail, or not, was mostly overgrown and many downed trees made progress pretty slow. I finally managed to get to the GZ and poked around a bit. There were a TON of ladybugs everywhere here. It was pretty cool seeing the swarm. I stepped carefully about but i'll admit to needing a peek at the hint. Once I was set in the right area I found it quickly. Signed and stamped the log and replaced as found. All is well here for this old cache! So many signatures! Thanks for placing this one up here! Loved the views to the west and north!

It was a wonderful hike up here, although lots of gnats and flies on the hilltop. Monument plants were blooming, which is appropriate since the view takes in all of the town of Monument. I found Hall's Alumroot blooming nearby too, which is a special treat. Thanks for pointing out the bottomless pit. TNLN

My approach made this a 9. I found the cache after 30 minutes of searching and enjoying the view. I was about to call it and drop a replacement. Cache was not where the hint describes. I returned cache to coincide with the hint. Happy Geocaching!

Found it! Not sure about stacked rocks but it was under rock. Hasn't been found in a year and a week. Glad I made this detour . The view is definitely worth it! But still I have to say, I'm really glad I found the cache even with this gorgeous view :)

Great view of the Peak from here. Well worth the hike in the snow to get there.

Found yesterday when we could see maybe 66 ft. See photo. I've threatened before and I may yet change our handle to something more appropriate- The Cachochists. The iPhone died while logging the last cache so we headed down the trail while our battery pack rebooted it. Then we turned back around and headed back up to the top of the ridge where we largely failed to find a route conducive to our idiotic lack of gaiters and waterproof shoes. We followed someone else's tracks for a while and didn't always break through the snow-crust past our knees. Still totally worth the trip. I appreciated the hint although there wasn't that much snow at GZ. SLTNLN TFTC
I can see 66ft? Bottomless pit?
