Use caution when visiting and exploring and PLEASE respect this historic sight. Also beware of the two open wells on the West side of the building. There are two entrances to the trail leading to the cache. I have included both possible starting points. The trail can be easily driven if you have a truck or SUV and I have driven it many times in a car though I would not recommend it if you have a nice car.
The Glendale house was built and maintained by one of the original settlers of the Beaver Park area named John McClure. This beautiful building was built sometime in the 1860's and was a popular stage coach inn and restaurant. It served many customers along the wagon trail now known as Turrell trail. The inn served stage coach travelers from Colorado Springs and Pueblo as well as other areas.
Looking at the building closely you can see that there were two floors as well as a basement level though the building’s walls are crumbling and I would not suggest standing under them. Also there are two open wells dug into the ground to the West of the building that someone could easily fall into so PLEASE use caution especially with young children present. Originally there was a balcony running along the front of the building but no more. What is left of this balcony and all the other wood of the building is now charred and burned away in a fire that ended the life of this stagecoach inn.
The haunted tale of the Glendale house does not stem from this fire however. This story occurred during happier times when the Inn was in full swing and there was a large and happy wedding planned for that fateful day. It is said that there was a young woman who lived at the inn who was madly in love with a young miner who worked in the far off mountain town of Leadville. The couple met and fell madly in love at the inn, and the miner promised when he had the money he would come back and marry the young woman.
One day a letter came indicating that the young man from Leadville had mined a rich deposit in the mines and now was coming back to her with plenty of money to marry her and start a new life together. Arrangements were made for a wedding to occur at the Glendale house the very day he would arrive there with a couple of friends who struck it rich with him.
The day of the wedding the beautiful bride waited in excitement on the balcony along the front of the inn for her fiancé to arrive on horseback down Turrell trail. She was wearing a beautiful white wedding dress with peach colored flowers on the chest and shoulders. The day wore on and her fiancé did not show up. The party trickled off and yet she stayed on the balcony watching for her love. The next morning her fiancé was found dead. He had apparently been robbed and murdered for his portion of the wealth by his two accomplices then set upon his horse who wondered down Turrell trail to the Glendale house. It is said that the young woman fell ill and eventually died of the illness while staying with relatives who were taking care of her. Some say she died of a broken heart.
The story goes that at night people coming down the trail towards the stagecoach inn, especially people on horseback, can sometimes see a lady in white floating above the ground in front of the door to the inn right where the original balcony would have been.
This is an area that I grew up playing in and my younger sister witnessed an apparition here that matches the story before we knew the history of the location

CONGRATULATIONS to Cx4 on being the first to find!

Easy peasy! I love when geocaching can take me on new and exciting adventures. Creek bed was dry, but the aspen leaves were making so much noise in the breeze that I thought there would have been water. Also, I was startled by both several coveys of quail and a rolling Gatorade bottle. Being by myself sure made more more skittish than I normally would have been. SL, TFTC!

TFTC! We wanted to go see that old house and were pleasantly surprised to find there was a cache near it.

Mrs. RocketMan and I made a late afternoon run to Penrose to check out this geocache. I first let my Garmin route us and we ended up at a dead end into someone's driveway before reaching the cache. We then took the northern route based on the cache waypoints. The trail got pretty rugged after the residential area and I was happy to get to try the 4WD on the Tacoma. We reached the ruins without having to cross the river.

After checking out the ruins and logging the cache, we headed down to the river to contemplate the other route back to town. After getting out of the Tacoma and checking out the situation, I decided to go for it. The river was pretty deep for the Tacoma but the bottom was solid and we made it no problem.

Thanks for the geocache and this is a favorite for sure,

Had to cross the river on foot. Water was too deep for my Geo motorcycle.
