Hunters Run Log Bridge
The Bear Cave
Log bridge in winter

Hunters Run cache is just west of Bear Creek Park in the Pike National Forest.
During the summer you can take the High Drive off of Gold Camp Road and park at N38 48.755 / W104 54.006 where the trail begins. If the High Drive is gated off, park where the one-way High Drive rejoins Gold Camp Road at N38 49.238 W104 53.482 and hike up the High Drive 0.77 miles to the trailhead.

At about .14 miles, you come to a Y in the trail with a narrow trail going ahead and a wider one turning right almost 180 degrees. Take the turn. Just a few hundred yards before reaching the log bridge over Hunters Run is the Bear Cave at N38 49.108 / W104 54.808. We thought briefly about putting the cache there then thought better of it. I’m sure someone furry lives there at least part of the year.

You can also get to the cache by parking at the Section 16 Trailhead (N 38 49.417 W104 53.361) and taking that trail. By doing so you can do a double- or triple-header with Red Rocks Ramble and/or St Patty's Overlook caches.

 Hints

From the log bridge crossing Hunter's Run, go about 75 feet northeast and you will find a narrow steep trail. Take it the remaining 350 feet to the cache.

REALLY BIG HINT: You will find two really big boulders with a 10 foot space between them. Go there!

Out for a chilly day of hiking with GoMRT. Didn't see a lot of views today, but being socked in fog ALL day (and not getting rained on!) was a cool experience. Wow, GPS bounce is serious up here! Thanks for placing this cache. The food in the burlap sacks is still all there...green beans or dried chow mein, anyone?

Back on the loop again today finishing up the caches and going way up high on the spur trail to recon other caches. Nice little side hike to this one. Cleaned out the container while at it. Rehid to fit in the area.

Found someone's food in a burlap bag too (see attached photo). Odd...

This area is very snowy and icy. The trail mentioned was snow covered so couldn't find it. Scrambled up the icy rocks instead. Jumped over the cache at one point but spotted it after backtracking.

This cache has been beckoning for awhile, but I hadn't been along the trail through here and was uncertain about the last 300 feet. Was it screeee? No. It is steep, but in a woodland way. Thanks for a great walk working off some Thanksgiving dining.

Great spot for a break during our hike. We enjoyed seeing a couple of labradors frolic in the water while we were there. Cache is in good condition.

Out for a run around the 5.5 mile Section 16 loop. Had a friend along so decided to introduce him to geocaching. What fun to find a cache that is almost 15 years old and read the original logbook. Signed log. Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache.

I was so happy to finally find this cache! The first time we attempted this cache we were pretty new to caching. Two more attempts failed because the hikes had to be aborted. Today I ended up on the wrong trail. It didn't matter I was determined to get here. So up and over the ridge and down to this cache I came from the Crystal mine trail. I was exhausted by this point so after this cache I headed down the trail and back to the car. Cache is in good shape. Thanks!
