This cache is located west of Hotchkiss, Colorado just off of Highway 92 on Roger’s Mesa.
Rogers Mesa is named after Calvin O. Rogers; however, I cannot find any information to indicate when he settled the area or for how long. The main industry was, and still is, agriculture including farming, ranching and fruit production. Here is a brief history of the fruit production on Roger’s Mesa:
The Roger’s Mesa Fruit Growers company was incorporated in 1907. In 1908, land was purchased from James B. Lazear (see GC61H8D Going to the Depot? for more information about him) and the packing house was constructed. However, in 1918 heavy snow collapsed the roof and all the apples inside were frozen. In 1926 the Lazear Fruit Company was incorporated. Additionally, another packing house was constructed in Lazear in 1932, but it burned to the ground in 1972.
Today, fruit production is still a main industry on Roger’s Mesa. Area growers now take their fruit to the Roger’s Mesa Fruit Company to be packed and shipped out for sale. The current packing house can be seen at the intersection of 3100 Road and Highway 92 located one mile east of the cache site.
There is a small pull-out right next to the cache site. The road doesn’t have a ton of traffic, but can be busy at times. The highway is VERY busy and small children and pets should be watched closely. If there is traffic present, please wait for them to pass before hunting.
Happy Hunting!
Congrats to beth1957 and Linecacher for the FTF!
