!! Exciting New Cache Series!!

“COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST”

The Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before us.

There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado.  This series will introduce you to many of them.

The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones.

COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST is not affiliated with any other ‘Spirit Quest’ group.  Special thanks and credit are given to SixDogTeam who started the Indiana Spirit Quest in 2004. The idea has rapidly spread into many states.

The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task.  It cannot be accomplished by just one or two people.  This project will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers  willing to place these caches.

After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state.

If you are interested in joining the “Walking Through History Clan” contact may be made by sending an e-mail to the owner of “Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Mo untain Passage”.  Use the ‘Send Message” link at the center of the page of their profile.

Each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.

REMEMBER:

If you are APPREHENSIVE about cemeteries – AVOID this series.

The cache container is a camoed 35mm film canister.  The cache has been placed near parking because the walk to the cemetery location from the closest road and then on to the northeast was very marshy and a muddy walk for us with uneven ground over a distance of 0.18 miles one way.  It now appears that this cache is on private property so an up close view of the cemetery is not possible without permission of the property owner.  This is an excellent example of an older cemetery frozen in time.

The cemetery is about 0.5 miles distant on a bearing of 138 degrees true.

This cemetery contains about 30 headstones.  The most recent marker appears to be about 1900 when the Evergreen Cemetery to the west was just opening.   There are examples of metal fencing which are of some interest.

Today we were on a "quest" to complete the requirement for the Colorado Spirit Quest Challenge---101 CSQ caches. We headed east of Colorado Springs to avoid any leftover snow from the weekend. We always enjoy exploring this part of Colorado and discovering the variety of cemeteries it holds. We had a few DNFs but also replaced a few containers that were truly missing. Most containers were in good shape with dry logs. Thanks to all the COs for placing and maintaining their caches and providing the history for each of the cemeteries.

There was only two rocks at this GZ that might have previously covered a cache, but no container. We explanded our search quite thoroughly but never found anything. We will log a DNF and watch the logs for evidence that this cache is still there.

Our very first find!! I started this as an activity to spend some time with my kids. They LOVE it!! “way better than Pokémon go”. Lol. Used it as educational time too to reflect on the pioneers coming across this country!! Hopefully we don’t make mommy mad with all the stopping and hunting!!
