The Battle of Beecher Island took place in 1868.  As was usually the case then, the combatants were the US Calvary and the Plains Indians.  The battle lasted about 3 days with both sides claiming a strategic victory.  In the final anaysis, this battle, like so many others really didn't matter a great deal.

Beecher Island was washed away in the flood of 1935 so there is no real battlefield left.  We do have this monument that was erected to honor the two scout that were the first to provide relief.

Park to the south of the cache location near the cottonwood tree and walk to the cache location.

History is a favorite for me and learned about this event long ago when I was reading about the Plains Indians (btw, still a love of mine. I’m reading Dee Brown’s book on the Fetterman Massacre; part of the motivation for doing this cache). A beautiful view. As I was coming in from the south I was noting 5e topography and imagining the impact on the battle. Now overlooking the area the scouts had a plus and a minus with their location (possible water but no high ground so the enemy could use plunging fire if they wanted, not that that was the Indians way). Appreciate the hide and the chance to see a piece of history.
