Watch for loose footing, cheat grass spears and the occasional dive bombing bird. Bring your own pen, Sharpies work best on Rite-N-the Rain paper.General winds in western Colorado typically blow out of the southwest in the afternoon. In the event of a cold front moving into the area, the general winds will be out of the North, Northwest. Western Colorado also has morning and evening winds called “diurnal winds”. These are the winds that blow up valley in the early afternoon with daytime heating and down valley in the evenings from nighttime cooling. Wind speed is usually measured at both eye level and 20 feet. Eye level winds are the winds that are affected by ground and surface features, while 20 foot winds are usually thought to be smooth or laminar in flow and unaffected by the surface terrain features. These two winds can be significantly different. There are also the winds aloft, but these winds can only be measured with the aid of sophisticated equipment in weather balloons.
