Looking for a cache that gives you a 15 minute hike to a spot with great views of James canyon and the plains?  Mellow Mountain is a hidden gem on National Forest land near the Boulder Heights neighborhood.  This requires a 10 minute drive or 30 - 45 minute bike uphill from Broadway and Lee Hill in Boulder.

This cache can be reached via an unmarked trail from the end of Elk Ridge Lane.  Hike up and over a ridge, past an intersection (go straight) and up to a rocky peak known to as Mellow Mountain.  The cache is a 7" camo container with pencil and log book.

My dad and I went out this morning specifically for this cache. Nice hike to get to the top. We had never been here before. Took a few minutes to find once we got to the top. We were just about to give up and head back down when I saw something that matched the hint. SL. TFTC!

Great little hike. Lots of wildlife up here, I saw the buck in the photo and an owl was sitting about right where the cache is hidden!

This was a little treat of a hike after a long day of work and right before sunset. I thought I would have the entire mountain to myself (minus the homeowners on the shoulders) but I actually met a runner on my way back.

The trail was well-defined, except for the very beginning. It's hard to see where the path begins at the end of Elk Ridge Lane. No need to wander over the smashed barbed wire fence leading to the sign that says 'No National Forest Access,' though it's probably tempting if your GPS shows Forest Service land reaching the road like mine does. I'll post a picture of where the trail is for future finders approaching from Elk Ridge. There's at least one other trail that intersects this one. I didn't see a steep route off the west side of the mountain, but a masochist may be able to find it. Thanks for the FTF.
