Central City is a historic mining settlement founded in 1859 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush and came to be known as the "Richest Square Mile on Earth".On May 6, 1859, during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, John H. Gregory found a gold-bearing vein (the Gregory Lode) in Gregory Gulch between Black Hawk and Central City. Within two months many other veins were discovered, including the Bates, Gunnell, Kansas, and Burroughs. By 1860, as many as 10,000 prospectors had flocked to the town, then known as Mountain City, and surrounding prospects, but most soon left, many returning east. The 1900 census showed 3,114 people. In 2010 the census was 663. Also, for those interested, there is a benchmark on the stone wall behind the sign.

Cache can be reached while standing on same level as sign.

Headed up to the mountains today to escape some of the heat in the city. Great day to explore an area that we had not been to before.

Good condition.

A quick find, but must be 2 containers since nobody has logged this one since 3/26 yet 8 more people have logged it since then. Anyways, TFTC!

Out for a run with Greasepot and Pobah (the band is back together after a hiatus)! Great day to be out and about near Blackhawk--even beat the rain (although Greasepot took one for the team AND didn't melt). Thanks for adding to our fun and TFTC BigSmile.

32 degrees outside and I'm wandering around in the dark and cold looking for this geocache. It was trickier than it needed to be. Not because of you, but because of me. Tftc!

Decided that now might be a good time to go and get some geocaches to the west of the Denver metro area, before they get snowed in - this was the third of six. TN-LN-SL. Thanks !

Made the stop on the way home from my claims. I made it harder then it should have been going around the backside. Thank you for the placement. I’ll get the other one on my next trip up.

{FTF} We have been in Dillon for a week of caching. Seeing a few FTFs that were waiting to be found. Decided to head to see what we could do. Took awhile of looking but soon laid eyes on a will camoed container. Soon had a nice clean log out and inked. Thanks for the hunt!
