The archery elk season opened on 8/26 but I hadn't had a chance to get out until yesterday. A few days ago I wasn't sure where I wanted to go so I decided to go to a place that had some attractive caches in the area so when the hunting for elk was slow, the hunting for caches would be hot! So I picked this area near the Bowen Gulch Protection Area.
Yesterday I didn't find any elk but I was able to log Near The Boundary - Bowen Gulch Protection Area and Porphyry Peak Northeast. Today I decided to extend my hunt to Porphyry Peak Southwest. I hit the trail by 5:30 am and headed first for Porphyry NE to glass for elk. About 8 am I spotted an elk pass through the saddle between NE and SW. Perfect, that's the way I intended to go anyway. I eventually made it down to the saddle and did some still hunting in the trees. But as usual, I got busted before getting close enough and before I even saw them.
So since that game was up, I headed up the steep ridge to the summit of SW. It seemed to be as steep as my climb up Mt Bethel but at least it wasn't as long. Once at GZ the find was a quick one and I signed the log of this rarely visited cache. Then after logging the cache I resumed my elk hunt.
Thanks Denali41 for placing this remote and lonely cache!!!

Hiked in from the NE on the Wolverine trail with my Honey and hiked up the East side of Porphyry Peak. This took some time for a couple on SS but the view from the top made it worth while. the cords were right on and we found it fairly easy which gave us more time to enjoy the view and take some pictures. The cache was in good shape, signed log and put it back. Thank for placing a cache here.

My puppy Orizaba and I came to the Grand Lake area for a day to complete the Across The Divide Geotour and to place a new cache near Monarch Lake. I decided to extend the trip by a day so I could hike a loop to do a maintenance check on my three caches in the area, and to also visit HONEYMOON to check on its status. So we camped at the trailhead and had a fun cache maintenance hike. I found this cache to be in its proper place and in fine condition–it’s awaiting future cache seekers!

My hike today began at the North Supply trail head. I hiked up the Wolverine trial then bushed wacked my way up Porphyry Peak North East. After finding the cache there (GC41QKX) I continued across the saddle to the South West Peak. Found Cache number 2 for the day (GC32RGB.) From there I followed an avalanche path back to the wolverine trail and made a failed attempt at Honeymoon (GC23NT1.) I finished off by grabbing the cache Near the Boundary—Bowen Gulch Protection Area (GC48ECR) on my way back to the car. This route seemed very easy at first. Summiting the NE Peak was a cake walk. The SW Peak was steep and loose but the distance was not far. The Wolverine trail on the returned had me regain so much elevation that I practically re-climbed the NE Peak.
I sat my pack down near a tree, looked at my GPS and realized the cache should be behind me. Still looking at my gps I climbed up a rock and smacked my head. The hit did not knock me out but turned on my geo scenes and I made an easy find.
