RM Off Road Series (ORS) #3: Georgia Pass

This cache is the fourth of seven in my #3 series of off-road caches located along fun/beautiful north-south route that goes over Georgia Pass. This route runs for about 23 miles (21 miles dirt) from Hwy 9 just north of Breckenridge to Hwy 285 on the south.

Cache Information
This cache is on a side trail that you can access after you reach Georgia Pass. The trail is marked with a sign that says Colorado Trail/Glacier Ridge. There is a very good view of the valley that you came up from this vantage point. After logging the cache, head back to the pass to continue down the south side of the mountain.

RM Off Road Series #3 Complete Cache Listing (North to South)

1. Moose Meadow
2. Stream Junction
3. Cabin With a View
4. Another View at the Top
5. Valley View
6. Awesome Meadow

7. View Back at the Pass

Trail Information

Rating/Description
This trail is rated moderate because of a couple of rough/steep miles of trail you will encounter just north of the pass. Most of the trail is easy, particularly on the south side of the pass. The trail can be done in most 4wd SUV type vehicles. I left my Jeep at home for this trip and instead did it in my 4wd Toyota Tacoma and made it easily. This was really a fun/beautiful trail with none of the edgy shelf road type stuff that makes Mrs. RocketMan nervous (Too bad because I did this trip by myself). Disclaimer: You need to decide for yourself if it is safe to make the trip in your vehicle.

Winter Months
The trail becomes 4wd impassable in the winter months. I believe it is open to snowmobiles.

Time/Distance
The entire trail (dirt portion) is approximately 21 miles and should take about 2 to 3 hours driving time. You will also need to include time for finding the caches, exploring, sight seeing, lunch, etc.

Trail Waypoints
See waypoint list on the Moose Meadow cache for the trail waypoints.

Cache in great shape. Looks like nobody has been here in a few years. But all is well.

Great shape by the Colorado trail. Gave some water to a hiker.

Found this one on the pre-run for the group run on Georgia Pass. We made it this far and continued a little further, but eventually became blocked by a fairly large snow drift. This cache was found in good shape still!

I enjoyed visiting the Denver area this week from my home in Pittsburgh, so that I could attend my fifth GeoWoodstock. Today's offroad adventure to find eleven caches on the Jeep trail to Georgia pass was my favorite highlight of a great roadtrip. Thank you to Team Red Rubicon for being great hosts to the out-of-town visitors!

I've selected this cache somewhat randomly for inclusion in my "Top 5% Greatest Cache Hunts" bookmark list, as a representative memory of an awesome day.

Found it! Woohoo. I hiked from north fork of swan river on CO trail to the Georgia Pass against the flow of traffic. Clouds were building so I was in a hurry but found it pretty easily and got back down into the forest before bad weather , which I managed to somehow avoid.
