On a hill with a view of Rabbit Ears sits a lonely cache surrounded by fields of Colorado Wild Flowers. The short drive off of Highway 40 will reward you with the glorious beauty of Mother Nature at her finest. Just east beyond this cache on the same road is lovely Dumont Lake, and just beyond that is the trailhead to the Ears. There is also a monument to the first improved Highway 40 at this trailhead location. Stop and smell the flowers and add another find to your numbers. Don't forget the camera!

We left Steamboat Springs this morning and headed out to find five nearby caches in two different counties. This was our first stop. The wildflowers were plentiful here and very pretty. We found the cache easily and enjoyed the scenery. TFTC.

Surprisingly busy road. We were second to find today.

The following is a cut and paste log about our trip, anything specific about this cache is above

My 12 year old son Nosirrah52 and I are on another county caching road trip. This time we flew into Omaha and are working around the Southern Half of the Middle of the American West. (map link below)

We begin our trip with finds in 1873 different counties and hope to add around 150 new counties to that number on the trip. If all goes as planned, we will finish finding a cache in every county in 6 states - Colorado, Nevada, California, Oregon, Utah & Nebraska. That will bring us to 25 states with a find in every county. We will also visit Wyoming, Washington, Idaho, South Dakota and maybe Iowa on this trip.

Our goal is to find a cache in each of the 3142 counties in the United States and we are on pace to achieve that goal by the time Nosirrah52 graduates from high school. He will be entering 7th grade in the fall.

As we travel about we are choosing caches based on many factors. We have found the most favorited cache in a county in more than 500 different counties. We find that the most favorited cache in a county is frequently at an interesting location and adds to our enjoyment of these trips. We hope to add many more "most favorited" on this trip. We are working on finding as many of the Top 1000 most favorited caches in the country as well - this trip has fewer than some trips because we are hitting fewer population centers but we might get 20 of the top 1000 checked off our list.

Other reasons we might have chosen this cache are to fill in a Jasmer grid spot. We love finding old caches. One target for this trip is Potter's Pond in Utah. That cache will be my 3rd and final cache placed in August 2000, a few more spots will get me to a triple Jasmer completion. We have also identified some challenge caches that will complete our Fizzy grid as well. Sometimes we just need a guardrail or lamp post cache to clinch the county and we frequently get bonus caches where we fill up for gas, eat or spend the night. Plus we are always hoping to get lucky and get some first to finds. We have FTFs in 9 different states and hope to add a few more on this trip.

As a father, the best part of these trips is the windshield time with my son. Over the years we have had some amazing conversations about life that probably would never have occurred if we had not been in a vehicle together 12+ hours a day for 10 days. As he gets older, he has become a great navigator, as well as our tour guide and food finding expert. I love the serendipity of not having any idea what kind of offbeat and interesting things we are going to see on any given day.

If you are a county cacher or are interested in learning more about what we are doing there is a Facebook group with more than 250 other like minded wanderers. We would love to have you join us. Just go to Facebook and search for "county cachers" and request to join. Be sure to give your geocaching name and I will get you approved.

This is a map color coded by Nosirrah's age when we found a cache in each county. Right now the map has a huge purple blob representing counties we hope to find on this trip, as we clinch counties they will turn into baby blue which is the color representing the age of 12.

In closing, I want to thank the community of hiders who have blanketed the country in caches. Without those hidden caches we would have nothing to find and may very well have never started on this wonderful journey. So a big shout out to all those who place and maintain caches.

Diorex and I found this cache while on a county caching adventure. We are trying to go to every county in the United States (3142) and grab a geocache, before I graduate high school. On this trip we will pass two thousand counties with a cache that we have found. Tftc
