Covered Hiwan Wagons
Hiwan Homestead was a cherished mountain retreat to the families who lived within its rough-hewn walls. In the 1890's, Mary Neosho Williams, a Civil War widow, and her daughter Josepha were among the aristocratic society of Denver who camped at Evergreen.
They acquired the simple log structure and hired John "Jock" Spence, a Scottish carpenter, to convert it to a summer cottage. The property was named Camp Neosho after Mrs. Williams' middle name. Overnight guests would stay in tents, comfortably equipped with wood floors, stoves and double canvas walls.
In 1889, Josepha graduated from Gross Medical School in Denver and became one of Colorado's first women doctors. Seven years later, Josepha married Canon Charles Winfred Douglas, an Episcopal clergyman who achieved world acclaim for his musical work.display picture
Josepha Douglas died in 1938 and the house was sold to Tulsa oilman, Darst Buchanan. His wife re-named the land Hiwan Ranch. Buchanan's Hiwan Hereford cattle were known throughout the country and won many stock show prizes.
Six generations of notable families lived in this rustic mountain lodge before it was developed as a museum by Jefferson County Open Space in 1974.
Parking is available at: 4208 S. Timbervale Drive Evergreen, Colorado 80439
There is an interpretive trail that leads around many of the historic structures in the park. The trails are short, gradual, and well-maintained.
The park is free, and boasts many features, including flower gardens, historical buildings, foot bridges, and, of course, covered wagons!!! There is no admission required for outdoor sight-seeing.
It's a relatively popular area, so try to use some stealth.
Retrieving the cache is easy. Just make sure you hide/ cover well when you are done. Because of its location, it might be exposed to more than rain, so if it ever needs attention, let me know.
Container is a small Tupperware-type, with room for smaller travel bugs, and about any sort of Geocoin.
Good Luck!
BIG HINT- GPSR'S tend to go whack-a-doodle under trees, so it's..... Under the footbridge. Step off the trail- one big step or two little ones. Minor excavation- put the rocks back when you are done!!

03/11/2018 By rolfdenver Thanks for taking us here! We added a new logbook waterproof page and a pencil stub, both in a plastic bag. Also added a commemorative airport line opening lanyard from RTD. Took nothing. The container is getting a little old and cracked and probably needs to be replaced soon.
