From the time when kids had to walk uphill both ways in a blizzard to get to school the Yuma County Historical Society has set out to mark and locate as many old schools as possible.
Dist 43 was formed in 1887 when the area was still Arapahoe County. At this time Vernon was part of the district. For a short time in 1903 it was part of Adams County before it finally became Yuma County. In 1904 a school was built in Vernon and a bond of $600 was issued to finance it.
in 1947 The area became Vernon Consolidated and went unti the early 1950's when they consollidated with Wray
