GCQ186 Unknown Cache Lost My Cache

Somewhere on the Grand Mesa there is a cache waiting to be located. It should be less than a mile from a seasonally-maintained road over basically flat terrain. But it is NOT in the middle of a reservoir as the above coordinates suggest. In winter it's accessible only by cross-country skiis or snowmobile, but may be under quite a bit of snow (elev. 10,000').
Here’s the story: A friend stopped by for a visit while traveling across the country. Naturally I steered the talk to Geocaching and he seemed quite interested. He told me he was very experienced with map and compass, and loved to roam wilderness areas. So I showed him how a GPSr worked, and then guided him to the Hanging Out in the Park cache. He thought it was fun and asked if he could hide a cache for me to find before he left. It sounded like a good idea to me, so we put together some stuff in a container, I loaned him my GPSr, and off he went. He said he wanted to explore the Grand Mesa, and would let me know the next day where he had hidden the cache. I cautioned him about taking accurate coordinate readings, and even told him about the good common practice of approaching the waypoint from several directions just to verify the accuracy of his figures.

I was a little worried when I had not heard from him the next morning, but when I opened my mailbox I found my GPSr and the following note:

Sorry, but I thought I’d get an early start towards Denver. The Grand Mesa was beautiful, the weather superb, and I found a neat spot for your cache. I remembered to take four readings just like you said. I converted all compass headings to true, except maybe #3 – I don’t know about that one.

(1)From N39º 02.028’ W108º 12.095’ the cache is 186º true
(2)From N39º 01.366’ W108º 12.909’ the cache is 96º true
(3)From N39º 00.562’ W108º 11.498’ the cache is 324º either magnetic or true
(4)From N39º 01.216’ W108º 11.083, I forgot to write down the heading

It should be very easy. In case you need another hint: It’s exactly one mile from #4 to the cache. Have fun and I’ll see you next year, I hope. Hide a cache for me.

When I first read this over, I thought: Great, you dummy, you forgot to write down the coordinates of the cache. I’ll never be able to find it. And I don’t even know how to contact him for quite a while. A nicely-filled cache gone to waste. Oh well.

But after a little while of pondering, I thought of at least a couple of ways to find the cache. This is one adventure that definitely requires pre-planning. Good maps are a must. This website could be a help. Or maybe this one. Or not. And a compass if you don’t figure out the actual coordinates ahead of time. And bug spray.

The cache originally contained: White Jeep TB "Lonnie," Yellow Jeep Travel Bug, night-light Travel Bug, Colorado Geocoin, GC.com patches, pins, decals, and lanyards, logo magnet, pocket First Aid kit, compass flashlight, compass keychain, compass zipper pull, Signal the Frog antenna ball, Krispy Kreme delivery truck, and a couple of other items.

Can you find it?

Finally! After many attempts over the years, finally got down to it and found this cache. Learned lots and had a lot of fun as well. When I found the marker, I knew I'd get the smiley today. Cache is in great shape. It's pretty much empty though, I may have to take some swag back up there sometime. Thanks for the great cache!!

Interesting way to find a cache. Cache not hard if you do the work right and know how to do the work. Thanks for making me to learn. Coordinates that I calculated were with in 30 ft which is about what most of my cache coordinates are within. Thanks again for the unique hide.

I've had this puzzle solved for some time now and finally had a good reason to go for it, #500 for me. Walked into the middle of nowhere, turned in a circle, and there it was. Really cool puzzle design, thanks for the fun. Lots of room in this big ole can.

Visiting bugs while checking and doing maintenance on our IACG series (and other FAVs) in and around Grand Mesa National Forest. Another of our all-time TOP FAVs! Could not resist visiting a bunch (over 20) of TBs to it so that their owners can see what a REAL geocache adventure is all about!

After being away from home GZ for 7 months AND a harsh winter on top of Grand Mesa (10’+ is normal) we had a need to do maintenance of 6-8 or our near 40 caches planted in or near the National Forest area. Additionally, the Forest Service was having a special presentation on trees, tree growth, tree cookies (slices showing rings) etc. so we decided to make an afternoon of it. We replaced 4 missing caches, several logs, and checked on several others that were questionable due to recent DNFs as well as “accidentally” planting one new one!. We are dragging a passel of TBs with us from our recent trip from Virginia so are visiting them to any of our caches that we passed by even if we did not stop to look at it as logs show recent finds. If a specific not is not made, the cache is assumed good, those that were checked and/or replaced will be noted. We also traded a couple of bugs and checked on some of our FAVs of friends while in the area. Have fun finding our caches and/or watching your bugs travels! Team kekj

Up on the Grand Mesa (not just any mesa, like the one I live on, but the grandest one) and decided to take the drive around to Land's End and back.

I have to say I almost ignored this one except for two things: 1) I have made many a nutty hike in pursuit of the item in the clue, and 2) this is exactly the sort of puzzle that there should be a lot more of. But, you know, it looked hard. Thought about it for 5 minutes and it became very easy. Calculated it two ways, got exactly the same answer. Performed the provided check and it came out right. Edited the point already in my GPS and planned to get it while doing my look about at the top of the mesa.

Decided I had overshot by going all the way to Land's End and went back to the a parking spot of sorts and started out for the easy cross country. An obstacle appeared, but it just made the walk longer. I found the hint, but it was not the sort I hoped for. So many of them aren't. For a bit, I suspected a cow had eaten the cache. A little more searching and eventually I had it, too. Got to thank kekj for the virtual adoption of the cache, it is still doing great.

Once put back, I decided to go the rest of the way around the obstacle. Managed without getting my feet wet, but it was likely the longer way. On the other hand, I got right by the fence and trails always develop by fences, so I had an easier walk for half of the way.

We calculated the coordinates to this cache late last fall but we knew the cache would be buried in snow so we waited for warmer weather. We finally got up to the Mesa on Labor Day weekend and walked right to the cache.

Thanks to the last cachers who found it, the container seems to be keeping the weather out. Contents in good shape.

SL TNLN Thanks for the fun! Smile

We apologize if the dates on this log do not correspond to those on the cache log. We are hosting a Meet & Greet tomorrow, 17th, in Delta and group size has grown to near 40 so we have not logged our caches for the last two weeks. During that time, not only are we getting ready for the event but we have Found 35+ caches (including our Multi, LB, Puzzler, and Earthcache for 7 of August, but we have also SET over 55 caches of which 21 have already gone active including 1-LB, 1 TB hotel, 2-puzzlers, 7 – Multi’s that were very involved (CofM - City of Murals - Delta, series) and one run of 24 which currently has 6 active with the rest to go active by Monday, AND I work full time! Needless to say, we have been very busy! I need to get these logged by Sunday as they also involve some movement of TBs of which we currently have in hand 20+, and many will be going out at the event. SO! Please bare with the (sometimes) incorrect log date AND the brevity of the description of the find of YOUR log. In some cases we will be coming back to fill in the details as an (Edit) TEAM kekj

We WILL come back to this one and fill you in on the FUN we had doing this one! GETS A FAV FOR SURE!
Cache was in BAD shape, full of water, fixed it all, but story for another day. Also will say that we missed GZ by less than 20' and spotted it from that point, again, story for another day. WILL COME BACK as we want to post picts of our map plot and how we actually got here - another day. Replaced log with WaterProof paper, all now in good shape. p.s. Carried a BIG baggie of trash out, took log book home and managed to dry it out and is in perfectly readable condition! VERY INTERESTING READ! Would like to post photos of it (With CO's permission - nothing Xrated) but at very least would willingly mail it to CO) MORE LATER!

This was my 2nd attempt at this cache. The 1st was last summer and was very close. Did some recalculating and was right on! Sioux Moon and I were out with our trusty horses and had a terrific day. We followed some elk for awhile, they were cautious but curious. I kept looking over my shoulder to see if they were tracking us back Smile

While horseback riding on the Grand Mesa National Forest, DNF our first cache of the day so moved on to this one. Booboospal had used Base Camp to plot the coordinates. Bingo! Found the cache, ate lunch and enjoyed a gorgeous sunny day with Colorado blue sky and the appropriate white fluffy clouds while our steeds munched on the available tidbits. Saw 4 elk who were also watching us. This was a learning cache. How fun it is to learn something new. Travel Bugs FarmtagZ and BRONCO visited the cache. Later in the summer many cows will be grazing in this area, but today FarmtagZ didn't see any. Only the 4 elk.

Woo-Hoo, that was a lot of fun, solving the puzzle that is, not the hike. But a lot of fun, and gratifing also. Came within 34 feet and it was easy after that. This gets an award star from me. SLO TFTC
