Cowboy was thirsty and the Dolores River was nearby so he headed his big black gelding, Coal, down a trail to the bank of the river. Cowboy and his horse where down at the edge getting a drink of the cold pure water when his horse slightly spooked. Cowboy knew immediately there were riders surrounding him and they had the sun at their backs. Cowboy eased out his Colt 44 and slowly turned around looking at the mounted riders.
Straining his eyes Cowboy saw the glint off a Sheriff's badge on the lead rider. Sheriff Goodnight spoke, "We saw the dust you made coming to river and thought you might be Amos Wheeler, the outlaw we been trailing for two days. But you're not him, so we'll keep looking. By the way, what is your name son?" "They call me Cowboy" he said. "Oh sure" said the Sheriff, "You got a reputation as a straight shooter in these parts. I am pleased to meet you," sticking out his hand for a shake. "And if you ever need a job, I can always use a good Deputy and I know you would make a damn good one". "Thanks", said Cowboy, "I got a job wrangling cattle right now but I will keep that job in mind. So long Sheriff, I hope you find your outlaw".
