Dubois & Toliafero, Colorado

Dubois History:
In 1892, Goose Creek was established in the Gunnison Gold Belt. Goose Creek was later renamed Dubois. Dubois had a post office from 1894 – 1910.
Toliafero History:
In 1895, Nugget City was established on Goose Creek near Dubois. Nugget City was later renamed Toliafero at the request of the US Post Office because another Nugget City existed near Golden. Toliafero was also referred to as Tolifaro, Tolliver, and Taliafaro. Toliafero had a post office from 1896 to 1898.

As Dubois and Toliafero grew, the nearby mining towns wanted their own school. The closest school was 7 miles away in Powderhorn. The deep snows and severe winters made transportation to the Powderhorn school impossible. Dubois and Toliafero petitioned the county superintendent to form District 27. The petition was granted only to be revoked due to (1) a protest and suit from Spencer District 15 and (2) the original petition containing signatures from residents outside the Dubois and Toliafero area.

Dubois and Toliafero revised the legal description of the proposed district so it would not infringe upon Spencer. The county superintendent granted the revised petition and District 28 was formed. District 28 also included the Gateview area. In 1903, the Dubois school was abandoned.

Information primarily taken from Gunnison County Historic Preservation website and "What's In A Name?" by Charles A. Page (1974).

Please take some time to reflect back on the lives of these pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state!!

I am doing a solo run through southeast Colorado trying to pick up counties and DeLorme squares. This is my last day of my three day journey.

I'm in Colorado for a family ski trip, and I couldn't resist coming a couple of days early and grabbing a few more Colorado counties!! This was the cache I chose for Gunnison County!!

After my adventures try to get a cache in Hinsdale county, I wasn’t sure if my planned cache for Gunnison county was the best idea now. I started looking for an easy one right on the road. This is what I came up with. In reading the cache page, I noticed the formatting suggested it was the same owner as the Hinsdale cache. Hopefully this one would be similar. I pulled over and spotted the cache almost immediately. Thank goodness! I was kind of cooked from what ended up being way more of a long drive than I planned thanks to the weather and I still had to get back to my hotel in Montrose. A heartfelt thanks for the cache here!

Explored this area on the way to discover new places in Colorado we hadn't visited before.

The cache was significantly damaged and missing its lid, so we did some field-repairs. We do recommend that the CO pay a visit to the site when given a chance to inspect the field-repairs. SL. TFTC!
