A Sheriff’s posse out of Monticello came riding up to Cowboy who was fixing himself some grub under a shade tree. “Howdy,” said Cowboy. The Sheriff said, "What is your name, son?“ "My name is Cowboy. I got a small spread west of here”. He continued, “What can I do for you gents?” The Sheriff said “We have been following a couple of bank robbers for a day and a half. And they slipped us a couple of miles back. We can’t find any tracks at all.” The Sheriff said “OK Boys, it looks like we hit a dead end !” Cowboy said, “I saw a couple of guys on the main trail west of here. They were dragging brush behind their horses and weaving their way down towards Cortez like they were hiding their tracks. It might be the owlhoots that yer looking for.” “Thanks Cowboy”, the Sheriff said, “We will mosey on down that way to Cortez and see if we can run into them.” The men looked relieved as they knew in Cortez they could get some vittles and maybe a cold beer.
