Just off the Tiehack hike, bike, ski, snowshoe, horse trail in the Pike National Forest near Fairplay Colorado.
UPDATE JULY 2010: We have refreshed the geocache with NEW Tiehack Geocache souvenirs (see image) and NEW camera.
You must hike, bike, ski or snowshoe along a single track trail to reach this cache at about 10,800 feet elevation
(NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES ON THE TIEHACK TRAIL).
Dogs and Horses are welcome on the Tiehack trail!

From Fairplay, Colorado, go SW on Highway 285 to County Road 18.

Follow County 18

1) <3? miles to the first forest service access road (on the right) which requires you to start hiking, biking, skiing or snowshoeing or have a high clearance vehicle in summer only. Follow this road <1? mile to a trailhead... the road ends, the trail goes left and right; GO left on the trail.

2) >4? miles to the second forest service road (on the right); Follow this road <1? mile to the NOT OBVIOUS Tiehack trail just over the ridge on the right.

Follow the trail from the east or west (easier) or go cross country (much harder)...
The cache is an army ammo box near a tree. Sign in, take your picture, take a trinket, leave a lapel type pin for our collection and we will post a picture of them on the web.

This is a family project as we have a cabin nearby and we hike / ski this trail 2 to 3 times a month. Have fun in our favorite backyard.

Love to find these early geocaching era caches healthy and still in their near-original condition, even five years after the owner last checked in. Dropped off a TB that needed a cache this size.

This Cache is one of the reasons we came to Fairplay today. Today is our 4Th Anniversary Geocaching!! WOO HOO.We found the right road Forest Service 182 and drove to the end and parked. Found the Trail and started our hike West. The Mosquitoes were thick this morning. I'm glad we had BUG spray. Trail is well marked and an easy hike. Found the BIG container well hidden. Grabbed a CD and took our pictures with the camera. Thanks for keeping this one going over the years. Signed the log and were off to the next one.[8d][8d] SL TFTC

We parked at the intersection of FSR 182 and CR 18, which we think is the first forest access point on the right from highway 285. At least it worked for us. From the parking location, we trekked along FSR 182 to within 0.37 miles of the cache. At that point, FSR 182 intersected Trail 659. Our assumption is Tr 659 is the Tieback Trail. We followed Tr 659 to the left (west, I think) to within 180 feet of GZ. A short bushwhack brought us to the cache, which was easy to recognize. We used the camera in the cache and took a picture of one team member, Trekker, with the log book. SL and headed back to our vehicle. Per our GPS, the total round trip hike was 3 miles. We didn't see anyone the entire time. Another day we hope to continue further on the trail. T4TSmile
