Larimer County has 255 peaks having an official "Ranked" status. One of them, located in the north central part of the county, is not climbed too often, even though it is easy to drive near and has a relatively easy hiking route to its summit. This is Peak 9940; it has an elevation of you guessed it–9,940 feet. It is the 94th highest of the county's ranked peaks.
I first ascended this peak about 14 years ago and was recently asked if I'd like to accompany a couple of hiking friends to climb it again. I jumped at the chance, and we had a very enjoyable outing with our puppies. It was an easy decision to hide a cache in the summit area as an added enticement to the relatively few adventurous cache seekers who wish to visit fairly remote mountain locations in Larimer County. I found a nice spot to hide the small container. Here's where to locate it: adjacent to the summit cairn is a pine tree. At the base of this tree is a fairly deep rock cavity that extends back toward the cairn that is above it. The cache is at the back of this cavity, to the left of the pine tree as one looks toward the summit cairn. The container is covered with some pieces of wood.
A summit register is at the summit cairn. That is NOT the geocache. Sign it plus the cache log paper and you earn double honors for your drive and hike!
Coordinates for a suggested parking location are given below. The Deadman Road and Pearl Beaver Road used for access to the peak region are closed from December through mid-June. Enjoy your time in this area of Larimer County.
