***Congratulations to Lego Crew for FTF on 8/8/08***
River Bend started out as a military outpost along the "Santa Fe Trail" in 1858 and soon became a cow town because of its close proximity to the railroad.
This small cemetery on the hill is all that is left of the once thriving community.

You are looking for a camo'ed canister w/log, pencil, eraser, -n-sharpener.
Please leave these.
Anything else is fair game.
Please be careful-n-replace it like you found it.
Thanx!

!! Exciting New Cache Series!!

"COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST"

The Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have 'walked' before us.

There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series will introduce you to many of them.

The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones.

COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST is not affiliated with any other 'Spirit Quest' group. Special thanks and credit are given to SixDogTeam who started the Indiana Spirit Quest in 2004. The idea has rapidly spread into many states.

The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task. It cannot be accomplished by just one or two people. This project will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing to place these caches.

After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state.

If you are interested in joining the "Walking Through History Clan" contact may be made by sending an e-mail to the owner of "Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Mountain Passage". Use the 'Send Message" link at the center of the page of their profile.

Each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.

REMEMBER:

If you are APPREHENSIVE about cemeteries – AVOID this series.

Located on a hill overlooking I-70, the great plains, and the Great Rocky Mountains.
We saw some pioneer vehicles just off the highway when we placed the cache.
Mrs. rockymtn8iv got pics.
To get there: Approximately 4.5 miles west of Limon, CO, take exit 354 off I-70 (eastbound or west bound)-go north then 1/2 mile east on dirt road. The road turns north and crosses a cattle guard. As soon as you cross the cattle guard, turn west. There are two ruts heading uphill westward. They will take you up to the cemetery approx. 1/2 mile away.
A 4X4 vehicle isn't required but recommended due to ruts/terrain.
The area can get quite messy after a rain/snow and might be near impassable even for 4X4s.
In winter this may be a toughy.

You are crossing private property on a right of way. Please be respectful, No litter, Cig Butts, etc.

ALSO BEWARE and BE AWARE! This is Rattlesnake country, be cautious! Look around at all times. Look-n-Listen. Careful where you reach/walk.

You might see cattle-n-Horses, and you might also see: hawks, antelope, horned toads, and various other prairie wildlife. Please note any critters ,wild or domestic, you see in your log.

Pictures are always a bonus!

No luck for us today, but we had a really nice visit regardless. Looks like a service is coming up in the next day or so. Amazing views. Backhoe was sitting right where the gps tooks us, so maybe the cache has walked. Thanks anyway!

Made the rough drive up the hill to this really cool cemetery, only to come up empty. Oh well, we spent a nice 20-30 minutes exploring the cemetery, and you should see the big holes some animals have made! One was about a foot in diameter!
There was also a fresh grave recently dug, a sheet of plywood was covering the hole. Nice to see current activity in this special place.
Thanks for bringing me to this really cool cemetery. If I ever get back here hopefully this cache will be replaced. CO you should probably check on it.

The CCLP did invade the Southwest!! The entire crew set off for a 16 day/5000+ mile odyssey through 10 states that was entirely planned from cache to cache! Over 450 prime offerings were targeted, with one day alone having over 8200 favorite points!! When the smoke had cleared and the car aired out, we had gone 285/296, snagged over 50 TBs and geocoins(the Riches of the Southwest), found 3 path tags and earned one more, sprinkled a couple dozen limited edition, totally awesome and extremely rare CCLP path tags for the finders along our outrageous route, and finished our fizzy grid for the first time!!

Highlights:

-10 National Parks( Hot Springs, Carlsbad, Saguaro East and West, Grand Canyon North Rim, Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches)/ and 7 National Monuments( White Sands, Montezuma's Castle, Sunset Crater, Wupatki, Navajo, Horseshoe Bend, and Cedar Breaks)/ and spending the 4th of July on 2 Indian reservations, Hopi and Navajo. They don't celebrate it like we do!

-Several incredible hikes to or through unbelievable places: The Narrows at Zion, Corona Arch trail in Moab, Little Horse slot canyon trail near Goblin Valley state park, Delicate Arch trail at Arches, North Mill Creek swimming hole in Moab, and the Grand Vista in Canyonlands.

-Wildlife: mocking crows and humongous ravens/ a coyote in silhouette dragging a roadkill off an early morning NM road/ big old jackrabbits/ road runners/ two different hawks nail rodents and fly away/ a plethora of lizards/ so many bugs unique to us, highlighted by the neon gold beetle we saw in Boulder/ deer/ prairie dogs/ antelope/ and four Bighorn sheep that gave us a show at Zion as we left the park to the East.

-Food: FatBottom Girls Cupcakes in Hot Springs/Mesquite Steaks at The Cowboy Smokehouse Grill in Panguitch, UT/Capitol Burger food truck in Torrey, Utah/ Sweet Cow ice cream, The Buff, and the Diner Drive-in and Dive famous The Sink in Boulder, CO./ and way too many burgers and otherwise mundane meals.

-Entertainment: Kartchner Caverns/ a spectacular full double rainbow near Carlsbad, NM/ the incredibly fun melodrama at the Gaslight Theatre, Funny Foot farm petting zoo, and the Spanish mission at San Xavier del Bec in Tucson, AZ/ Buckstaff Bathhouse spa treatment in Hot Springs, AR/ Pistachioland in Alamogordo,NM/ the Big stuff in Casey, IL/ Old Mesilla City in NM/ the terribly awesome birding and caching spectacle of Papago Park in Phoenix, AZ/ sunrise at Coal Canyon near Tuba City, NM/ Mexican Hat, the exciting dirt road through Valley of the Gods and the entrenched meandering river in Goosenecks State Park, UT/ sleeping in a Navajo Hogan in Monument Valley/ camping on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and the memorable Cape Royal road and hot dog picnic we enjoyed there/ Red Cliffs road from Moab to I-70 and the incredibly cool Rock House cache/ NCAR museum tour, the Pearl Street mall and celestial Seasonings factory tour with Mint room in Boulder, CO with dear Uncle Spruce.

We return enriched and refreshed in that very special way that only travel, adventure and long durations of shared time can provide; eager to distribute the Riches of the Southwest to the cachers of the southern Ohio-Indiana borderlands and begin preparing for the CCLP Leaf-A-Lympics event cache this Fall!

Yes, this is a favorite!! Great ride up the cactus filled pasture road to an incredible spot. Do this one!!

With storm clouds looming in the distance, I quickly traversed the the 0.5 mile or so of pasture "road" to reach the hilltop cemetery. It was actually cold and very windy on the hill with temperatures dropping from the upper 80's a bit east of here to about 58 on this hilltop. That was a shock to say the least.
