This is a cache intended for fisherman and individuals who enjoy
hiking. The majority of this hike is fairly simple, although the last
500 feet is steep and is not indented for old
dogs, or small kids. This is a great spot to go fishing and enjoy a
hike. I have had many successful fishing days here where I caught
between 15-20 fish in 4 hours.

The geocache is located next to a great fishing spot known as
Nichols, which is just east of Rampart reservoir. If you know how
to get to Rampart reservoir, you can easily find this location.

The best explanation I can provide is to follow the sings that track
you to Rampart reservoir. You will need to pay $5 to gain access to
the area if you would like to drive in and save about a mile hike
to get to Rampart Reservoir (FYI.)

If you do not want to pay this fee you can park at the
GPS coordinates N38.97763 W105.00916. This
is known as the Rainbow Gulch Trail Head. Or you can take a shortcut
saving you the 5 dollars, and a significant hike. Continue on RD. 303(Northfield Rd)
until your GPS unit says you are about 500ft from the geocache. From Colorado Springs
head west on highway 24, and at the second stoplight in Woodland
Park by McDonald's turn right. This road will become Rampart Range
Road. When you reach a Y in the road at the North end of town veer
right. When you come to a T at the end of the pavement turn right
again. After 2.4 miles you will see a large parking area on the
left. This is the trailhead. It is well labeled with signs. If you
decide to take this trail, you will have to hike east of Ramapart
Reservoir.

If you decide to drive in and pay the $5 fee proceed all
the way past the dam (there might be a security guard at the
entrance of the dam) park at the first parking area to your right
after you pass the dam. There will be a small sign that reads
"trail" take this trail down to the lake and enjoy a fun day full
of fishing and geocaching. I love this spot, and enjoyed the hike
immensely! I hope you can say the same, good luck fishing and happy
trails!

A week or so ago I stopped by the Pike National Forest office to ask about closures. The person there said the area north of Rampart Range Road is open for day-use only and gave me a map. Based on that information, and the recent melting, I decided to hike in today. The cache is in good shape, so I left a TB. Thanks for the hike, the discovery, and the view.

The area around Nichols Reservoir is still currently closed even over 4 years after the fire and may never reopen. You may want to consider archiving this cache so as not to tempt cachers to go there & try to find it.

No question: there's plenty of "up" in Colorado! Cache location does offer a great spot to enjoy the Nichols' view. Thanks!
