Alliklik


The Alliklik belonged to the California group of the Shoshonean division of the Uto-Aztecan linguistic stock, their closest relatives probably being the Serrano. They were located on the upper Santa Clara River. They were called Alliklik (“grunters”) by the Chumash. They lived in winter villages that might have had as many as 100 to 150 inhabitants or more. At the time of the Spanish conquest of California, the total population was probably at least 1000.
