The Las Mesitas area was settled by Hispanic Settlers from Abiquiu and Santa Cruz areas, and in 1878 the San Isador Church was built. It was destroyed by fire 97 years later, in 1975. The cemetery behind the ruins is still in use.

This small, traditional cache can be found in the ruins of the church. Please be respectful of the surroundings, and imagine what it was like when the church was built in 1878.

Was driving on our way to Chama, NM when I pulled over at this neat landmark... and for an extra bonus, there is a geocache here! It was an unusually cold 43°F with a light rain, so thank you for the hint to make this a shorter search. After signing the log, I admired the remaining architecture before heading back on the road. tft , SL

After spending the last couple of night at a nearby RV park, and riding the Cumbres Toltec RR yesterday, we stopped by here on the way out. A very interesting ruins, I'd have liked to see it in it's 'glory'. We read the info, then wandered thru the building and quickly spotted the cache. Thanks for the hunt.

Love that I had to drive by the oldest church in Colorado to get to this one. The shell is in remarkably good shape for having burned down over 40 years ago. Cache was an easy fine. Thanks for the cache!

14:00 Although I am from Texas, I have been driving past this site since 1949 (yep, I'm that old ) but never took the opportunity to stop. Even stayed (on occasion) at the two places less than a mile east of this grand old piece of history. Thanks to gr8scottw (the CO) this is a well planned, well done, well placed and, according to the CO's notes, a well maintained cache. Lots of things in the container but TN LN SL
