NGS Benchmark series.I wanted to make a series to show geocachers more of our nation's benchmarks. Though they can be found in every county in the continental U.S. benchmarks are are just another little known survey tool to the public. But when you look on the NGS site or Geocaching.com you can see every detail about them. There is also description for each that tells exactly where they are. These descriptions interest me the most, at times you have to wonder where in the world did the railroad track go that was 50 feet from a certain benchmark years ago. I hope that this series gives a historical insight to geocachers of what our country looked like in the years past.

01/01/1952 by CGS (MONUMENTED) DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1952 2.8 MI E FROM MONUMENT. 1.0 MILE SOUTH ALONG U.S. HIGHWAYS 85 AND 87 FROM THEIR JUNCTION WITH STATE HIGHWAY 50 AT MONUMENT, THENCE 1.85 MILES EAST ALONG A GRAVELED ROAD, 40 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE ROAD, AT THE TOP OF A STEEP HILL, 6 FEET SOUTH OF A FENCE, 42 FEET NORTHWEST OF A LARGE SANDSTONE BOULDER, 3 FEET ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE ROAD, SET IN THE TOP OF THE CENTER OF A 4X4 FOOT BOULDER.
01/01/1983 by NGS (GOOD) RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1983 RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. THE DESCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE EXCEPT ADD 1.9 METERS (6.2 FT) SOUTH OF A WITNESS POST.
03/26/1998 by USPSQD (GOOD) RECOVERY NOTE BY US POWER SQUADRON 1998 RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION.

Easy cache at the listed coordinates. The benchmark is nearby to the west and across a fence. No need to cross the fence to find the cache.
03/30/2019 By Back Country Horsemen These are tough to find safe parking. The traffic is moderate but flies up fast behind you making it difficult to pull off safely. I think this one may have migrated a bit down the hill. I was lucky & kicked it out of the snow.
