This is a traditional cache located off Seepage Creek Road (FS 509) near Creede, Colorado. There is no winter access due to snow. A high clearance or 4WD vehicle is necessary. If it has rained recently there will be mud and maybe some deep ruts in the road as it passes through the trees. Once you are close, the cache is an easy walk from the road.Cache is 4" PVC pipe, about 12" long, painted dark green, with a screw cap in one end. Original contents include log book and pens, Elf sled, rattle, bouncy ball, and Mardi Gras beads.
Bighorn sheep live in the area and can sometimes be seen from the main highway or on the rocky outcropping as you turn onto FS509. You may also see marmots before you cross the old dam.
We placed the cache in 2009 after visiting the area several times. 2015 is the first time we've seen water in the lakes on the way to the cache. On a still afternoon, the reflection of the mountains in the two lakes is spectacular.
While you are in the area, visit other caches, including Sarah Nixon's grave, Little Eagle's Nest Mountain, and Ghost Lake.
This is a beautiful area off the beaten path - one of the reasons we love geocaching. Explore and have fun!
