The Alpine Loop is one of the most beautiful 4WD trips in the USA. Might as well find a geocache while there!
You'll need a four-wheel drive vehicle and the better portion of an entire day to find this one. This truly is a beautiful drive and worth every second of the trip. The road up from Ouray is very difficult at first but gets easier after the first mile or so. Coming in from the east (Lake City) it's a bit easier.

The cache sits at 12,867 feet! You'll need strong lungs for the short but breath-taking (literally) hike. Be ready to scale loose rocks to find it.

It's an ammo box with a few things in it - including a camera and a log book. Be sure to take a picture of yourself and leave the camera.

We stopped by this cache on our way to Silverton from Lake City. Awesome views from the pass and the kids loved playing on the snow.

Exchanged some toys and took a trackable.

as we got up to the pass a storm was approaching. we decided on the side of caution and passed this one by without an attempt. but that means we will have to return someday. we enjoyed the drive over to lake city and our old ford did extremely well.
