The 8th of a series of caches planned to be hidden at or near the historic rural schoolhouses of Routt County - beginning in West Routt during the summer of 2016!

Fly Gulch school house sat on this corner of RCR 44 & 44A 1910 to 1992. "The district was created from Deep Creek District 7 and Moon Hill District 10. Originally named Trull, it may have included the Fairplay School." (Windows to Yesterday; Routt County, Rural Schools 1883-1960, Leslie, 1998, p.41)

Fairplay is farther west on RCR 44.

"Fly Gulch was named for an early settler. The first school was held in a log cabin and was a "subscription school" where students paid tuition. A school constructed later was used until 1910 when a fram school was built near the juncion of County Road 44A and County Road 44. It operated only in the summer.
"Fly Gulch closed in 1943 and the district was dissolved and annexed by the Steamboat Springs District in 1949. After the school closed, it was used first as a community hall and later as a grainery. In 1992 the school and teacherage were moved to the campus of Strawberry Park Elementary School in Steamboat Springs where they have been restored for use as a learning resource center." (Leslie, p.41)

FTF at 2:00 pm on 7/26!! Another new cache by this CO popped the other day and I knew that I had some time to run out here. We had just been nearby looking at houses but it was not listed yet. Came back after grabbing grandma at the airport All was in great shape. Thank for placing it and for the geofun!
