Platoro was a mining camp and now is a resort town nestled in a meadow at an elevation of 9,900 feet. When silver and gold were found together near the headwaters of the Conejos River the name of Platoro was given to the little town that sprung up below the mines. The name combined the Spanish words for silver and gold - plata and oro. Since 1880 the mining interest was an off- again and on-again proposition. The greatest amount of wealth poured out of the Mammoth Mine. A big mine of three levels and some 8,500 feet of tunnels. It ceased operation in 1906. The mine was reopened again in 1956. In 1945 the Sky Line Lodge was built and was the first resort to cater to fishermen and hunters. Today Platoro is known for trout fishing, elk, deer, bear hunting in the high country. In 1951 the Platoro Reservoir was completed making it the highest man-made lake in North America at 10,034 feet in elevation. Platoro receives an average snow fall of 60 inches and average rain fall of 31 inches. I have been coming to this area for thirty years. It is not an easy place to get to, but you may not be in a rush to leave. This cache is on private property with permission from the owner. This a traditional cache with some trading items. It is near an RV park and store. Go into the store and say hi to Debbie and Mike. The cache is a quick park and grab.
