West Elk Mountains viewed from near the cache

A beautiful drive through aspen and fir forest and alpine meadows, with a view of the West Elk Mountains when you reach the vicinity of the cache. The road can be negotiated without 4WD but is closed to cars from November until late May. During the winter, the road is a popular snowmobile route, but the cache would probably be under several feet of snow.
The cache is a short walk only slightly uphill from the road. It is a small rectangular Rubbermaid container with a blue lid. The container is from the former Marmot Cache (GCJCD4), which was archived in August of 2004. The cache contains a log book and pencil and the items that were in Marmot Cache when it was archived:

NASA sticker
motel soap
golf ball
marbled blue ball
bandaid in case
shiny pencil
line backer bean
Trivial Pursuit Flicks cards
polished stone
magnifying card
Gary and Mary Adventurers calling cards

To these I added:

Colorado keyring
mini playing cards

Visitors to this remote area do not find themselves totally without "creature comforts." There is a public rest stop at 38° 13.160 N, 107° 20.654 W.

Such a pretty drive, we came in from the Lake City side. The Lupines are so gorgeous and in full bloom. Thanks.

TFTC. There were a lot of really good hiding spots so this took us a while to find. We took the backseat drivers license which my 7 year old is thrilled to have.

TFTC, found while caching with CB_Beauty. Found this one late in the day and after driving up from Mt Baldy cache, noticed quite a change in temps up here. Beautiful area.

Quick find on an absolutely awesome drive down the Alpine Plateau road. Just absolutely stunning scenery. I'd put this drive in my top three I've seen in all of Colorado, along with Phantom Canyon and the Rampart Range road. Thanks a million for giving me a good reason to head this way and see all the cool stuff that I saw! SL - Zulu

Accidentally found this cache for the 2nd time! Took the way in from 149 this time and stocked the cache back up with 3 jeweled rings, 2 bouncy balls, carabiner and a woodburned geocaching keychain. Took a penguin kaleidoscope.

Thanks again!
