Recommended for kids  Takes less than an hour  Scenic view  Available at all times  Available during winter  Bicycles  Horses  Snowshoes  Cross Country Skis  Park and Grab

If you want to take a long fast trek down hill or else a tough slog uphill on a maintained trail, then check out the Flying Kilometer.

This cache is located at the summit of Owl Creek Pass from where you can choose to go down the steep 1km hill into Snowmass or take the 3 mile more gentle slope towards the Aspen airport and Buttermilk, paralleled by Owl Creek Rd (paved road) the entire way.  This is a paved trail in the summer which is great for biking or walking through the aspen trees and along the horse farms, and connects the Snowmass trails all the way to the Rio Grand trail at the base of Buttermilk.  In the winter it is a groomed cross country ski trail and connects the Snowmass and Aspen cross country ski centers by cutting across the Buttermilk ski area.

There is no parking available at the summit where the cache is, but there is a pulloff for dropoff/pickup or for a quick grab and  drive the quiet back country strech of road.  Cache is accessible year round and won't be burried in snow.

Out in the Aspen/Snowmass area enjoying a nice day and beautiful scenery, the only negative was the construction in Aspen backing up traffic for a couple of miles. I thought this was a crazy name until I arrived at GZ, then I understood the name and why they call that section the flying kilometer. TFTC

A nice quick cache & dash. Didn’t know what the flying kilometre was but it was obvious when we got here.
Visiting our son, who is working here for a year.
