North Park is bisected by a long ridge feature that extends from Jackson County Road 27 in a northwest direction all the way to the Illinois River. This ridge line once extended continuously many more miles to the northwest, but its continuity is interrupted by the Illinois River’s cut through it. The northwest extension is called Peterson Ridge; Peterson Ridge runs to the North Platte River, ending a short distance southeast of Delaney Butte. Combined, the length of Owl and Peterson Ridges totals almost 20 miles. But the ridge feature is hardly noticed by traffic along Colorado State Highway 14, even though the highway passes over the western ridge extension. It’s gentle slopes tend to conceal the scale of this long, long ridge that divides North Park into southern and northern portions.

Owl Ridge supports two Ranked Peaks; one is near its western edge, just before the ridge drops into the Illinois River Valley. This high point is named Owl Ridge West, and has an elevation of 8,942 feet. The other is positioned at the ridge’s eastern end just as the ridge drops to Jackson County Road 27. This eastern high point is of course named Owl Ridge East. Its elevation is 9,182 feet.

Because the actual summit of Owl Ridge East is on private land, the cache placement is well southeast of the high point, on BLM land. It can be accessed by parking along Jackson County Road 27 and crossing Owl Mountain State Wildlife Area and the adjacent BLM holdings.

Enjoy your time reaching the cache vicinity, finding the cache and signing its treasure, the log sheet!

I noted the log by HendrickClan that the lid on this cache is missing. So today, when I was making cache maintenance checks on several of my other caches in the area, I hiked up to this cache and indeed a "repair" was appropriate. Because the cache location is very close to the boundary of BLM and private property (but on BLM land) I decided to move it farther on to the BLM tract to lessen the chance that seekers would inadvertently get onto the private property. The cache is now hidden under the south side of a solitary rock. It's a small jar wrapped in black tape. Enjoy your hike to get to the cache location! I'd suggest parking within the Owl Mountain State Wildlife Area and hiking across this public land to reach the Bureau of Land Management tract the cache is located on.

Taking a caching trip with HendrickClan to the North Park area to get caches in deLorme segments 17, 18 and 28. Interesting lonely cache. Not a long hike (<0.5 mi) but very steep. SL

Thanks to HendrickClan for notification that the lid of the cache is missing. The next time I'm in the area, I will replace the container. The cache terrain rating is appropriate for this cache, based on the more than 1500 Terrain 3 and 3.5 and 4.0 caches I've found--a good basis for comparison.

This was a very interesting cache due to the beautiful fall colors today that we could observe from the cache location. Its a steep hike and I think it warrants more like a 3.5 or 4.0 for the terrain. We (me and geoguru1) are the first people to log this cache in over two years. The lid is missing but I used a flat rock to try to cover up the contents. SL. TFTC!
