There are two gulches right next to each other named "Limekiln Gulch". This geocache is along the eastern gulch, and guess what you'll find there -- a remnant of a LIMEKILN! You can drive right to it, or park nearby. Elevation at the cache: 9390'
Take the turnoff off of the Cumberland Pass Road up Limekiln Gulch (see waypoint chart). The dirt road has some rocks, but can be driven a short distance by a car if you're careful. A high clearance vehicle would be helpful. There's a parking area just up the turnoff road. The signal really bounces around here, so use your smarts.
The lime kilns of Gunnison County date back to the 1800's. They were used to "bake" calcium carbonate-bearing rocks into lime. The lime was used for cement, chinking for log cabins, and also in smelters. After the railroad came to Gunnison County in 1881, the lime kilns became obsolete.
The cache container is a small clear plastic cylinder with a white cap which will hold very small trade items.
