Takes less than an hour  Recommended at night  Flashlight required  Night Cache

Old Man Mountain was one of the oldest and largest Native American sacred sites in Colorado for more than 5,000 years. It is one of only three documented Colorado vision-quest sites, used by natives who would travel great distances and fast for several days upon the mountain peak as they awaited a divine message. The Ute used it up until the 1800s. Now it is a moderately challenging rock climb mostly enjoyed by locals.

Take a strong, directional flashlight with you as some of the tacks are far apart. If you can't find the next one, try shifting a little from side to side. The final is marked with two tacks. This shouldn't take more than about half an hour. I also don't recommend you go alone since there are lions and bears about, not to mention the Old Man himself might get you!

Didn't find it 07/30/2024 By supertodd88
My 16 year old and I found four of the tacks after the starting point but my wife and older son were waiting in the car and my wife was complaining an awful lot before we even left the car so I figured we better head back. Only here for one more night and I’d love to go back but not so sure that my wife will like that plan. And the one other cache I really wanted to do is a mile or so down the main road that is closed due to the wildfire. So far I’ve found the big goose egg in the Rockies…

Will keep an eye on activity for the cache. Wishing good luck to the next seekers! We will definitely come back another time to look for it. I will certainly be returning to Colorado to visit my sister and mom in the future. We had the precise type of flashlight the CO describes. RileyDog627 has been amazed at how superb it is compared to her “good” flashlight. Somehow we just couldn’t spot the 4th tack. For now headed back to the heat and humidity of Central FL!

I'm going to see how the next person gets on before making any changes. I did test the route with a noncacher, and she had trouble with one long leg until I showed it to her. You do need not only a strong flashlight, but one that can contract into a tight beam. A floodlight won't do it. The idea is to make sure each tack is only visible from the previous location. Maybe I should up the difficulty level.

Super bummed, yet apparently the misadventures of Mrs X and her sister RileyDog627 continue. It is Mrs X's last night in CO after a month of visiting. We decided to venture out for the night cache and hopefully a FTF. On our way thru the canyon we saw 4 gorgeous bull elk grazing by the side of the road! We arrived at the parking area just before dusk and started down the trail...to be greeted by a rainstorm! We took shelter under a tree and were debating about going back to the car. Opted to wait it out and after 15 minutes we were able to proceed down the trail...albeit quite a bit wetter. We made our way to GZ and after a brief search found the first tack...YAY! Then we found the second tack...and quickly found the third tack. And that's where it all came to an end for us. It was not quite dark so we figured we would expand our search a bit and see if we could find the next tack. Nothing. Went here and there and still nothing. Came back to the third tack and searched some more. It was now dark and surely the next tack would reflect off our nice strong flashlights...nope...nothing. We had even briefy searched near the third tack for the final container, but there was no indication this was the final GZ. It felt like we surely needed to find another tack and proceed further. We did a 360 search and were in that area for well over an hour. We sadly had to call it a night. Wet...Cold...Tired...and Empty Handed. Maybe another time...
