Mount Bierstadt is a 14,060 foot fourteener located in the Mount Evans Wilderness Area. It is known as one of the easier fourteeners to do, but it is still quite a workout. It was named in honor of Albert Bierstadt.

You can learn more about the wilderness area on this nearby cache.

To get this cache, you will need to begin your hike from the west side of Mount Bierstadt. Wherigo begins at parking; not on summit. Due to the Wilderness Area, the cache is hidden west of Guanella Pass. Use posted parking. Hiking to the summit is required to find it, so I encourage cache owners of challenge caches to allow use of posted coordinates instead of final coordinates, but it is your decision. Check the status of the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway

To do this Wherigo, download the cartridge HERE! We did a beta test online and onsite and everything worked great. Please let me know if there are any issues. The zones are big, and I kept the cartridge simple. Make sure you have a fully charged battery, and/or spare battery/portable charger. I put my phone in airplane mode and saved/closed the cartridge while hiking to save battery life. BE SURE to save after you unlock each zone as a safety net. Have fun! There are also some great waymarks to do in the area as well.

I'm going to try for Longs Peak later this summer, but since I've never hiked a 14er, I thought I'd better test it out first. After getting a heads up that I needed to be at the trailhead by 7 am, we left the house early and got there just before. There must have been well over 100 cars there already! As we were heading up, we met a few people coming back down again; one of them told us she'd started out at 4 am.

It took me 3.5 hrs to get to the summit and about 2 hrs to get back down again. Fortunately, today was beautiful, with temps only in the 60s, unlike yesterday and the forecast for tomorrow. We picked just the right day for it (along with several hundred other people).

Thanks for putting a cache here (which is in great shape, btw). It made the climb much more fun! Definitely gets a favorite.

So here's a lesson in dealing with Whereigo caches. Read the instructions! I took the day off work and decided it was time to finally hike Bierstadt. Last night, I did all the usual prep work - read weather forecasts, gathered my gear and made sure the cartridge and some caches were downloaded into my phone. This morning, I left my car at the parking lot and found myself at the summit a little while later after having enjoyed the gorgeous weather and views to the top. Then, I found the benchmark and tried to start the cartridge. No go - turns out, you have to start it at the parking lot. Luckily, the CO took pity on me after a humble confession by text (luckily, I had service in the area). I sent him a photo proving I hit the summit and explained what I did wrong. A short time later, I had the final coords in hand and found the cache quickly after the hike. A beautiful day for it, and I honestly wouldn't have minded not finding the cache, so it was a nice bonus. Everything's in good shape, and thanks a million to the CO for placing this cache and helping me resolve my boneheaded mistake!

After climbing Longs a couple of days earlier, we made our way to Bierstadt, which was supposed to be much easier. Well, it definitely was! We made it to the top for sunrise and enjoyed the quick trip back down. The mobs of people were not ideal, but what do you expect from a holiday weekend?! When we got down to the trailhead, there was a mountain rescue team there surveying climbers and giving advice. TFTC!

Yes we were part of the group who hiked to the summit and played the cartridge after the event early on Sunday morning. I had a problem loading the cartridge to my IPhone so I got the help of others who were with us. Thanks for getting us a cache in this creative way.
