An ammo can, near an old (filled in) mine opening along a nice but usually overlooked trail.
This trail is more "pleasant" than "spectacular", especially considering some of the hikes in this area. But it offers a nice forest walk with meadows and wildflowers when time is limited.

The trailhead is along the graded dirt road behind Priest Lake. Look for a pair of signs that say "Galloping Goose Trail 499" with arrows pointing up the hill. The waypoint is: N 37.50.655 X W 107.52.787. A little way up, you'll reach a junction. Waypoint is: N 37.50.808 X W 107.52.765. Turn right, and switchback up the hill.

When you get to the area of the cache, you'll see the mine opening above the trail and the small tailings pile below. Please be careful in the loose rock, or you could end up rock-surfing down the hill. This is always a bad idea.

Special thanks to SoloSue who helped with the hide, and to 2JeepersCreepers, who've offered to help look after this one.

Beginning swag included:

A calculater
Some stickers
A Whoopie Cushion
A little mirror
A Glow Bracelet
A small Nerf football
A couple of disposable ponchos (in case you get caught in a thunderstorm)
A Sacagewea Buck for the FTF
And a Hula Girl.

This was an extremely difficult cache to find. Actually took 3 days. First day just couldn’t find the right place to look. Second day was chased away by thunder clapping. Third day was the charm! Hidden away behind three large stones. Could not see anything in cache form. But finally found old smiley. TFTCSLTNLN

The posted coordinates took me to the mine. I looked for a while with no success, then looked through previous logs and used badnav's coordinates to find the cache. Repeating them so future cachers don't have to scroll too far: N 37 50.658 W 107 52.469.
Nice hike through an aspen grove. Thanks for the incentive to hike up here!
The cache is in good condition. TNLN. Fun to see several familiar names on the logs.

Decided today to do a hike in the area before we left for home and chose this cache. Enjoyed the hike even though there was quite a bit of altitude gain it was gradual enough. Everything was green there were lots of birds and there were no muggles. Used the coords provided by a previous finder and it was an easy find. Overall this was a great hike/find, TFTC!

The trailhead from the Matterhorn Rec area right off hwy 145 definitely has a nice trail that follows the old road up to the mine. Easy going, and had the mountain all to ourselves, too bad the noise from the hwy made it seem less than a wilderness. Took a little searching to find the cache, but found it right as a crack of thunder announced the approaching snowstorm. Took the travelbug and left a quarter. Thanks for taking us to such a neat area. Wouldve loved to keep hiking up the hillside, but with snow falling, decided it was best to return to the old ghost railroad bed, eat a snack, and get down off the pass.

Hiked in from Matterhorn campground. Distance was one mile with 500 ft. elevation gain. Enough to get our somewhat out of shape hearts beating fast. Cache was 55 feet off posted coords by my reckoning. Found it at elevation of 10150 ft. Hint, photo, previous log helped.
