!! Exciting New Cache Series!!
"COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST"
The Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have 'walked' before us.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado. This series will introduce you to many of them.
The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones.
COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST is not affiliated with any other 'Spirit Quest' group. Special thanks and credit are given to SixDogTeam who started the Indiana Spirit Quest in 2004. The idea has rapidly spread into many states.
The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task. It cannot be accomplished by just one or two people. This project will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing to place these caches.
After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state.
If you are interested in joining the "Walking Through History Clan" contact may be made by sending an e-mail to the owner of "Colorado Spirit Quest #1 - Mountain Passage". Use the 'Send Message" link at the center of the page of their profile.
Each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.
REMEMBER:
If you are APPREHENSIVE about cemeteries - AVOID this series.

So far for me, this was the most enjoyable cache to place in this series. The cemetery seemingly goes on forever. When I thought I'd turn back because I was at the end, I was indeed NOT at the end. From what I saw through my wanderings, there are at least three gated entrances to this cemetery, and a bit up the road to the west there is yet another section of the cemetery – that of the Improved Order of Red Men.
The Silver Plume cemetery was established in 1883 and is also known as the Pine Grove Cemetery. Sections of the cemetery are designated by wrought iron gates, but it is very easy to get disoriented in this cemetery. Graves are scattered in every direction.
A diphtheria epidemic, followed by smallpox, took the lives of many young children from 1879 to 1883. There are more than 60 children's graves in this sprawling mountain-side cemetery. An impressive granite monument to “The Ten Italians” who were killed in an 1899 avalanche above Silver Plume can be found in the I.O.R.M. section of the cemetery.
From what I am able to discern, there are sections in this cemetery for the International Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Improved Order of Red Men, Catholic and Methodist. The lower area of the cemetery on the east side of the road was referred to as the “Town Section” and was reserved for those not belonging to any particular religion or organization.
The road to the cemetery is behind the Silver Plume Train Station on the south side of I-70. Follow that street (allegedly called Mountain Street – but we saw no sign) to the left behind the station. There is a sign that says “Road Closed. Local Traffic Only,” however, the cemetery is open to the public. You will then turn left on another unmarked street called Paul Street. There is a large turnaround area where you can park. The road is somewhat steep and narrow. UPDATE 07/26/15 - cache container has been replaced with a lock and lock box with a few very small items, log book and small pencil.
