Italian miners came to Como in 1871 seeking coal. They named their town for a tiny lake in their native Como, Italy. By 1879 Como was a tent city of workers for the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad. The town was the terminus for the D, S.P. & P RR before the tracks were extended to Gunnison via the Alpine Tunnel and later a second rail route was built over Boreas Pass from Como to Breckenridge and Leadville. All this railroad activity increased Como's importance . The railroad was serviced by a roundhouse, depot and division repair shops. Travelers and the town's 600 residents were provided for by Chinese laundries, three hotels, brothels, shops and saloons.

In 1910, the Alpine Tunnel route of the D, S.P. & P RR was closed and much of the rail traffic through town declined.

Faithful efforts to restore the railroad depot and prominent roundhouse, (seen on the right side of the dirt road as you enter town), culminated in a re-dedication on August 22, 2015. There are several historic buildings in town. A 2-story, wood-frame hotel sits on the site of the Pacific Hotel which burned in 1869. the current hotel is open for business and also serves meals. What appears to be a wooden shed next to the hotel is actually the former depot. Across the street there is a 1910 brick building that was once a saloon. During and after Prohibition it served as a merchantile.

The Como Cemetery is .4 miles north of town. The cemetery looks deceptively small, but if you continue into the grove of aspens, there are actually about 200 graves..
