There are four concrete pads that supported a water tower that supplied water for the steam engines that served the coal mines in Eastern Lafayette.  The Simpson, Cannon, and Gladstone mines were but a few. These mines and others in the immediate area were active from 1888 up to 1956.  Agriculture was also served by the railroad and the grain silo's immediately North of this location. If you listen carefully you can hear water running through the pipes that once supplied the tower at this site.  Of note there is a concrete rail road marker just South of this site on the East side of the old railroad bed that underlies the bike path.

Beware the concrete base at the center of the pads as it is a racoon haunt and has been defiled by repeated visits of these nocturnal predators.  No need to go there.

Really glad it’s still there. Now I gotta work up the nerve to go back and try again.

Checked on this cache and everything is OK.

Didn't find it 07/28/2020 By Credo5280
Not a good start to the day. Started out at 7:40am and was eyed suspiciously by a guy walking his dog. I explained what I was doing but someone else must have not given me the benefit of the doubt and called the police on me. The Lafayette SUV police cruiser pulled up to me and I simply waved and began to mount my bike (I ride my bike to all the geocaches). Perhaps they decided an old, overweight white guy with long, frazzled gray hair wasn’t a real threat. After we shared a long period of eye contact they slowly drove away and I left.

Putting all of that aside, I did get a chance to actually look for the cache awhile but did not find it. I usually don’t miss ones rated this large. Perhaps someone has seen others look here, checked it out for themselves, and muggled it?

Without the explanation on the cache page, I doubt we ever would have guessed what this was. Not sure if the material will hold up to water/damp over time, but we'll see.

Out on this beautiful, but hot July day with good friends GanderGoose and mooseyaround. GG came up with this great plan. Thank you for this neat cache Alpenist. Loved the history lesson on this one. Earns a favorite point.

Went with GanderGoose and #1Beefers on an "Alpenist" caching adventure this morning, with a few other cachers' caches sprinkled in. I very much enjoyed reading the history of this site. A man running by pointed out a coyote that was watching us from a distance and listening with its big ears. Thank you for the unique placement and cache Alpenist. SL. Earns a favorite point from me because of the history.

Had a super fun morning with my good caching buddies, #1 Beefers and mooseyaround. A passerby did point out a coyote in the field. Thanks for the history and placement, Alpenist!

Flew down from NW Montana to visit my niece and her family for the holiday. In order to keep my Jasmer grid current I needed to find a cache placed in July 2020 and this one was on our way to Rocky Mountain National Park. Nice location and a quick find. TFTC
