American White Pelican has a wingspan of about 95–120 in (240–300 cm) and weighs between 11 and 20 lb (5.0 and 9.1 kg). The plumage is almost entirely bright white, except the black primary and secondary remiges, which are hardly visible except in flight.

It is a very large and plump bird; its overall length is about 50–67 inches courtesy of the huge beak which measures 13–14.4 inches (330–370 mm) in males and 10.4–13 in (260–330 mm) in females.

The bill is long and flat, with a large throat sac, and in the breeding season vivid orange like the iris, the bare skin around the eye, and the feet.

In the breeding season, there is a laterally flattened "horn" on the upper bill, about one-third the bill's length behind the tip. This is shed off after the birds have mated and laid their eggs, and outside the breeding season the bare parts become duller in color, with the naked facial skin yellow and the bill, pouch and feet an orangy-flesh color.

A quick easy find with sweet p Pea. The American white Pelican is just about the only bird that summers in freshwater and winters in saltWater. TFT C.

Found it right where I thought it would be. All is well here.
Today after work I went for a bike ride to grab caches. Not the brightest idea on a hot day, but that's what I did. After sweating a bunch I was happy to return to the air conditioned Jeep. I had fun, but I'm glad to be back home.
Thanks for the cache!

Caching my way to work and saw this cache along the way. Too cold for birds here today. TFTC! All is well with this cache.

Stopped to find caches named after my favorite bird species on the way to have lunch with good friends at Balistreri Winery. The bonus was seeing three pelicans and a few cormorants in the lake behind the fence. Seeing migrating pelicans in the spring each year makes me happy. Thanks for the placement, Imusttravel2000!

Collecting 25 individual gold coins for the Mary Hyde souvenirs game. Got my first 5 gold coins here. The log was a bit damp and the a great majority of the wire has rusted away. I was able to re-attach to its hideout. TFTC SL

A quick snag... thanks for the stellar hide

No pelicans today but they will probably return in the spring. Cache attachment was rusted through so loneranger made a quick field repair. TFTC

Thanks, imusttravel2000! I like this series. This morning I went out early to look for caches on the bicycle trails of Sand Creek and the South Platte River. After a good workout on the trails, I found some more caches before going home to help out with the grandchildren. I have been in Colorado for a week now, and I am getting accustomed to the altitude differential between Denver and Laredo, TX, where I live most of the year.
