Enter the Alpine Loop in Lake City headed towards Engineer Pass. This is a good road and you CAN navigate it without 4WD. The Cache is located just past 2 of the more familiar mines in Hinsdale County.
First you will encounter the Hard Tack Mine, which is now a museum. Next, you will come upon the Ute Ulay Mine, both of these mines are on private property. The Cache is located just as you re-enter public lands. Pull over at the historical by-way sign on the left. Cache is an army container full of items and a log book. It is located just off the road about 150' at 9263 feet.

We come to Lake City every summer and will upkeep the cache. If we cannot the owner of the campground we stay at has agreed too.

Read about the Troops Enroute (byway sign) and turn around. The cache is on the hillside under a shrub on the right hand side of the road.

On our way up Engineers pass. Made it in the Forester to Silverton no problem. What a fantastic road.

Quick find and an excellent place to stop. Mining was big here, over 100 years ago. Still lots of evidence, and the dam is impressive. This is a large cache, not a regular! So much room, so much inside. TFTC.

I was unable to find this cache. By looking at the picture from the last cacher I may have not gone high enough up. I will try again when I return around Labor Day.

MerryMary and I are on a two-week vacation to Colorado to enjoy the fall colors -- taking photos, camping, hoteling, hiking, and 4-wheeling. Today we drove from Delta, Colorado, to Lake City, and then went about 10 miles west on the northern part of the Alpine Loop. We stopped here to find this cache. Quick and easy after a short walk up the hill. Big container, too. SLTNLN -- thanks for the fun, rosenbuschfam...
