Crested Butte Trailhead Series
Welcome to the Crested Butte Trailhead series of caches. There are wonderful hiking and mountain biking trails here in the Gunnison Valley. For our hikers and bikers alike, I designed this series for cachers to log some finds before hitting the trails. The caches are near the trailheads, so no hiking or biking required.
The Beaver Pond Trail #516 begins at the Beaver Ponds Trailhead and ends at the ponds. It climbs gently through dense aspen stands. This is an excellent day hike in the fall season. A good choice for families with small children due to length and ease. Fishing the ponds is considered fair to good. When camping, please set up campsite at least 200 feet from the ponds. No facilities exist along the trail or at the ponds. Once on the trail, you cross into the
West Elk Wilderness Area where
Wilderness Regulations apply. Original contents are logbook/pencil/sharpener, several key chains, gold ball, golf tees, toy Soldiers, stickers, Dunebuggy TB Edit: I increased the difficulty on 9-21-2015 due to GPS bounce in the tree cover. The posted coordinates are correct when I walk up, but I let the GPS sit and they bounce to N 38 48.671 W to N 107 05.197 and then back to posted coordinates and everywhere in between. The cache is much easier to see looking up the hill rather than down. Elevation at the cache is 9398 feet.
