Overlook

This cache is dedicated to all firefighters. From the 14 who lost their lives here to 100s who lost their lives at the World Trade Center to the thousands who risk their lives everyday in the backcountry and in our cities and homes.
Thank You
Exit I-70 at the Canyon Creek exit 109. Go north to Highway 6. Turn east and follow it to the deadend. The deadend is the trailhead to the Storm King Memorial Trail. The trail is well marked and there is information about the fire and firefighters along the way.The trail was left pretty rugged to give you an idea what these and all firefighters are up against when they head into these forest fires.

Round trip is approx. 3 miles. The start of the trail is at approx. 5590' elevation. You will hike up to 6370' and there is an overlook with the story of the fire and other information. I could have stopped here, but that would be to easy. You will then walk down into the canyon to approx. 6000',(Guessing, had GPS trouble in the canyon) this part is pretty steep. The last leg of the hike is kinda tough. You will hike up a steep trail to the ridge and there is a sign at the top giving you a choice of which memorials to see.(I suggest seeing all of them)But the cache is to the right. I did keep the cache away from the memorials.

The cache is an ammo box. There are no firefighter related items in the cache (because I am not or have ever been a firefighter) but from what I have seen most of the visitors there are firefighters and I hope they will get involved and tell their teammates.

If any firefighters have a problem with this cache location, please e-mail me. I did speak with a half dozen firefighters while I was placing it and they all thought it was a good location.

Bring your older kids and lots of water and maybe even some food.

And thank the firefighters that you see on the trail for a job well done.

Epic hike and sacred ground. Being a wildland firefighter I remember the incident, have read the book and several studies about it. It was epic to come and walk the ground and see the different areas. tragic loss of life that made some good changes in how we fight fire. Thanks for placing the cache. VNC Captain 22A

We hiked up to the observation point, but couldn't make the climb to the summit today. There was still a fair amount of snow on the final push, so we'll be back in a month or so.

Nice hide- amazing hike that I have done before and beautiful girlfriend has done around 50! Left a geocoin to keep it going east-- brought from ding and dang in Utah.
