The Hayman Fire began near this location on June 8th, 2002 and became the largest wildfire in recorded Colorado history. Fighting wildfires is a relatively recent phenomenon that began in 1910 after 3.1 million acres burned in the northern Rocky Mountains. Aggressive firefighting policies were developed as a result, which have grown into the modern methods of fighting wildfires. The Hayman Fire burned for over a month and consumed 138,114 before it was contained. The effects of the fire are still visible as you drive along County Road 77 (Tarryall Road) but several groups are working to restore the forest.

Go west on Forest Service Road 290 (will show as FSR 209 on most maps) from County Road 77 (Tarryall Road). High clearance vehicles can traverse this road but you can also park on CR 77 and walk up the road. Please be sure to close the gate behind you.
