Dogs  Takes less than an hour  Scenic view  Recommended at night  Parking available  Camping available  Campfires  Flashlight required  Night Cache

The cache is located up in the Pingree Park area; turn off the Pingree Park Road onto the Browns Lake Road and follow your GPSr from there to the beginning coordinates.
A few years ago there was a fire in this general area. Although the firefighters were successful and the fire was eventually contained, the dedicated fighters didn't put out all of the dying embers. Some are still there, but you need to know how to see and find them! During daylight, there is far too much light to see the flickering embers and to follow them to their ultimate secret. Only at night will you be successful. After dark, show up at the beginning coordinates with a strong flashlight or headlamp and start shining it around. You should locate one of the embers blinking back at you! When you approach it, shine your light again and you should find another dying ember. Be persistent. Continue to do this until you find a location where several lights wink back at you. Once you reach it, the treasure of the hidden embers is very close! It's 15-20 feet from the three final embers, in a very logical location for a geocache. At ground level, and covered by a rock or two.

Please be cautious- there is a small stream to cross between the first and second embers.

Once you reach the treasure, be sure to look up and enjoy the stars and beauty above! Your experience here after dark should be an indelible one in your memory. Keep it as a treasure (and as a very special geocache find!).

It would be very surprising if the third "ember" is missing. The reflective tack is firmly embedded in a tree that was alive and very healthy on my last check, so it certainly should be in place. It's the most challenging of all the steps in terms of locating it from the previous reflector, but it should surely be there and is fully visible from the second tack if careful search is made with a bright light. There are no obstructions that would preclude seeing it if a careful look is made in the proper direction. Remember: this is a NIGHT cache that requires a strong light. Also, this is a Premium Member cache, and the cacher who just logged the DNF is a Premium Member but he/she did not consult the cache description directly--or the hit on the cache page would have shown up in my listing of cachers who have consulted the cache write-up. Apparently a smart phone was used (because the cacher does not show up in the listing of cachers who have correctly reviewed the cache write-up); that might be a further complication in his/her having been unable to progress through the embers. Don't know...

Based on the heads up by pokadockers my puppy Orizaba and I came up the Pingree Park and Crown Point Roads to check on this night cache. I walked the route and made certain all the embers were in place. At the final location, I verified that the tree had indeed fallen over, and the cache was missing. I removed the three final embers from the fallen tree and relocated them to another tree; a replacement cache is now residing near the new final location.

This geocacher reported that the cache might be missing.

This is surprising, because the correct tree was standing and the cache was in place just a few months ago. I will check on this the next time I'm up the Pingree Park Road this summer! Thanks for the notice of a possible problem.

We were camping up here again and tried to find it, since it was such a great memory...but we were unable to find the cache. The three embers were there, but
the tree is down and it appears to have been muggled. :(

I was in the area so stopped with my puppy Orizaba to check on this cache "sequence". Everything's in order.
