This Earthcache is for travelers who are transiting through Terminal B of the Denver Airport. Only people with valid reasons to be on the concourse (i.e. airport staff, employees/guests, passengers with a boarding pass and/or those who are in transit) can visit the cache.

THEY ARE NOT THE BRASS INLAYS AND COLORED INLAYS OR SHELLS - THOSE ARE NOT YOUR TARGET. IF YOU ARE UNSURE - READ THE HINT. IT WILL REALLY HELP. I WILL ALSO TELL YOU THIS: THEY ARE NOT PALM (OR ANY OTHER) LEAVES....THAT IS THE MOST POPULAR INCORRECT ANSWER.

As I often do, I was transiting through Denver on my way to a business meeting (this time in Anchorage).  While in Terminal B,  I was looking at the floor near Gate B29.  The floor is very unique - made up of various colored and shaped terrazzo pieces, it is also embedded with brass and colored cement renditions of fossils, native words and living things that ultimately became fossils (those are not the subject/object of this Earthcache). To my surprise - I discovered actual fossils as well.

Fossils (Latin for "obtained by digging") are preserved traces of animals, plants and organisms from the far past. Fossils range in age from 10,000 years to 3.48 billion years old.

Fossilization can occur through a variety of different processes.  For instance in Permineralization, the organism is quickly covered in sediment.  The sediment, usually suspended in  groundwater, fills the empty spaces of the organism where liquid or gases once were located.  In Replacement and Recrystallization, shell, bone and other tissue is replaced with another mineral.  Thus while the original item (example a shell) no longer exists, in its place is a replica made of another mineral.

At GZ you will see bronze replicas of various fossils.  You will also note some bronze representations of various life forms that could have resulted in the creation of fossils. (Admire them and then ignore them. Those are not your targets).  But, you will also see actual fossils.  These are located in a various shaped "tiles" embedded in the terrazzo floor.

To log this Earthcache please send the answers to the following questions to the Cache Owner via his geocaching account- Do not post answers in your log or your log will be deleted. There is no informational sign - you will need to do some internet research to answer some of the questions (not all) - unless you know the answers from personal knowledge as some finders have. There are two groups of tiles within a few feet of each other - please find both groups (or your tile count will be wrong). Questions:

1)  Describe the fossils to me: (a) what colors are they? (b) are there many or a few fossils within any given tile? (c) what are they fossils of? (d) what are the scientific names of the organism(s) that produced these fossils? (e) what is/are the modern day equivalent of these creatures? (f) are they concentrated or thinly spread out in the background material? (g) are they all of uniform size or are there various sizes? (h) What do you believe the approximate size of the largest fossils you see? The smallest ones?

2) What type of rock surrounds the fossils: igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic - explain why (note: not the floor itself, but the darker rock in each tile of fossils).

3) How many tiles contain these actual fossils (you will be between Gate 29 and Gate 31 - no need to go onto the carpeted regions). Just in case you are in a rush or there are too many passengers around, I'll allow you an acceptable level of error of +/- 2 tiles.

4) If you like - post a photo of yourself at GZ (that does not reveal the fossils) and/or tell us about your travel that took you though Denver's airport.

Remember - you are looking for actual fossils - not the bronze representations such as pictured below and in the background image....also the large bluish imprinted shells are not the fossils either. You MUST send me the answers no later than 3 days after you post a Found It. Answers MUST NOT be posted in the logs even if encrypted. Unfortunately, I will be forced to delete any log that does not meet these requirements.

I've been meaning to get to this one for some time, but every time I layover in Denver I either don't have enough time or can't get to it. This time, haassd and I made sure we got to it since we had nearly four hours before getting to Detroit; ZB stayed in Terminal C.

I know the CO and I am really happy to have finally gotten to his most popular cache. We emailed the answers to him, and hopefully they are good enough. Appreciate the diversion from usual airport activities, and TFTEC!!

I found this one with daddy while on a long layover in the Denver International Airport. He submitted the answers for me since I can't write yet. I liked the fossils and also the nearby dinosaurs!! Plane travel I am getting used to though. TFTC!!

A few years ago I came through this concourse and it was packed with people. Besides, the storefronts were being switched out so there were barricades over GZ. Bummer! I had to DNF it.

This time, I was on SW so in concourse C, bummed again. We'd been to my brother-in-law's funeral--a quick, expensive trip, but that's just not something to miss. We had said goodbye to our family members the night before, driven almost 2 hours to the Spokane airport and stayed overnight there for our first leg home to Ohio GEG to DEN at 6:20 a.m., argh. We'd picked such a flight so my husband could make up work that afternoon/evening after getting home.

Yeah, right. In DEN, just before we were scheduled to board, there was a maintenance delay. Then another, then another. We had time to grab lunch. Originally it was scheduled for something like 10:30, but by 12:30 they announced they'd have to switch planes and we had till 2 p.m. I looked at my husband and said, "I'm going to run over to concourse B and get that earthcache, if you don't mind staying with the carry-ons." He had his Sunday NYTimes so he was good.

So I sprint all the way, including just barely catching the subway shuttle so I didn't have to wait for the next one. Looked all around, took photos, checked the questions. Sprinted back. (Do you realize how many people do not "stand right, walk left" on moving sidewalks and escalators?!? grrrr) We even had time to use the restroom again before we got on the plane-- A2 and A1, yea!
We didn't get home until 9 p.m. But SWA did give everybody on the plane $100 vouchers, so there's that.

And there's the fact that I got a cache in Colorado.
Not sure all my answers are right, but I certainly did learn a lot about geological eras etc. TFTEC

Early this morning we came through Denver Airport, we got a little bit worried when we saw the long queues for security, but we were whisked through which allowed us time to step off the transit train at terminal B for this Earthcache.
We headed for Gate B29 and found this big blue fossil, which turned out not to be when we saw some perfect fossils nearby hidden slightly by temporary hoardings!
Studied the fossils while muggles passed by and answered the questions.
That done, we then got back on the transit to terminal C for our flight to Charleston, right in the path of hurricane Florence!
TFTC and bringing us here, answers submitted and FP

Stopped in for a layover from Oregon and saw this one. Think we did the research and sent the answers. Thanks.

Just passing through on my way home for a friend's wedding. Bismarck, ND --> Richmond, VA!
Traveled through here about a year ago and saw this earthcache but didn't have the time to get to the GZ and answer the questions. Now is a perfect time.
